Garmin 172C CANNOT DISPLAY CURRENT POSITION in text format
|

| Hello,
I have e-mailed the problem to their tech support but as I read here
that they never answer....
In the owner's manual p.26 Garmin gives the list of data that can be
displayed in text format through alphabetical order :
- ....
- POINTER
- POSITION
- SONAR
- SPEED
- ....
When you actually run through the scrolling list you find
- ....
- POINTER
- SONAR
- SPEED
- ....
So there is no way to display the current position coordinates on any
page except by entering Mark and then deleting the waypoint thus
created, which is stupid.
Has anyone met the problem ?
A GPS that cannot display the position , that sounds downright
incredible !!
I checked that I have the latest software version : 2.50

In many Garmins you can select the data fields displayed on the various
pages. It may be that you have opted, unintentially, to disable
position display. Check the manual (e.g., pp 25-26).

I believe those options above relate specifically to the Map page, but
may not work on every page. Are you trying it on the map page?

When I first used mine I too was puzzled by this apparent
missing data.
However, by reading the manual (I really hate to have to do
that) I found the following on page 9 with reference to
using the MAP page:
"Use the Arrow keypad to move the cursor. Notice how another
data field appears showing the bearing and distance from
your boat to the cursor, along with the latitude/longitude
of the cursor."
By a mere touch of the arrow keypad the cursor is on the
boat position before being driven by the keypad, now no
longer depressed. This then is your boat's coordinates. You
exit that data by pressing the "Quit" button.
There may be another method to invoke a permanent display
but I haven't found it yet as I have not long installed the
unit and it is presently moored 700km from my home, where I
now am.
But the coordinates are secondary to the map display and are
only really needed to transpose to another chart, either
paper or on a PC, and by the above method are easy to bring
up on the screen. I can live with it.
Hope this helps.

Thank you again Brian for your help. I eventually received an
internal aerial type that works with enough accuracy inside my boat.
Now I'll try to solve that display problem since I did not intend to
use electronic charts at first but display the position in huge
letters to report it on a paper chart. I think I'll have to think it
over again !
Thanks .

Yes, it really does not work directly on any page but BrianH gives me
here a method that I'll have to try.
Thank you.

Well Jean-Pierre, you DID buy a GPS plotter and the
principle functionality of such a device is to display the
boat's position on an electronic chart integral to the unit.
I myself already have a Garmin GPS72 that I used to have
connected to my notebook PC running Oziexplorer but that was
just too clumsy and power-hungry. However, such an
inexpensive alternative GPS unit would have given you all
you need.
But whatever GPS you have, in practice you will eventually
find that the various functionalities other than just
coordinates will become valuable, especially the next
waypoint display of distance and bearing.
With a later upgrade you can obtain the relevant BlueChart
region of your sailing area and then realise the true
potential of your device (tip: order from a US supplier -
and not Garmin direct - the cost, even with shipping and
taxes will be much less that buying in Europe).
Good news that the internal antenna performs satisfactorily
inside the cabin - the "accuracy" will always be optimal,
providing sufficient satellites can be received, otherwise
you would have no position, rather than an inaccurate one.
Best, BrianH.
