Not cheap by any means, but the Garmin Streetpilot 2730 is currently
available from amazon.com for US$788.

That's not a great solution for Europe. Which was the OP's request.

Doesn't sound like Europe is much of a problem, at least not map wise.
But of course, you're right, XM NavTraffic won't do him much good in
the UK or in Europe. So get a 2720 instead and add one of those FM
dongle things to recieive TMC. The 2720 is about US$710 at
gpsdiscount.com.

Personally, I like recommending the TomTom units to people as I think
they are and easy to use and have lots of features for good prices.
And, well, I like using them a lot. I like the Go 510, it's fairly
affordable, and it's got a bigger touch screen than earlier TomToms.
I've seen some good reviews of it online, I'll see if I can find one
for you.

Try the TomTom Range. Easy use and good display - it talks too. If you go to
Halfords, Comet or Currys you will get a demo of various Sat/navs including
TomTom.
