| Why is this feature something I need? I'm still looking at the Nuvi 350
which I understand doesn't have it. Doesn't this feature just let you see
where you've been? It doesn't sound to me that unless you're hiking it's
something I couldn't live without.

Track Log records a breadcrumb trail of your path in the GPS. It can be
viewed on the GPS display or uploaded to a PC. TracBack alows you to
retrace your steps following the Track Log. It's very important off-road /
hiking but can still be useful on-road to save a record of where you've
been.

There are quite a few uses of the tracklog that have nothing to do with
hiking. Whether it's something you want is entirely your choice.
One application is to later identify picture locations. On a vacation
trip you might be taking lots of pictures and not bother recording
exactly where each was taken. But digital cameras (and some film ones)
record the time at which each photo was taken. Since the tracklog also
records the times you can later associate each picture with the exact
location and there's software that automates this process.
You might want to create a record of a particular trip to share with
friends or on a website. A tracklog lets you immediately create a
detailed map of the trip to go along with any text description and
pictures.
I sometimes like to see what an area that I've visited looks like in an
aerial/satellite view as is available through GoogleEarth or via the
Terraserver. Both let me take my GPS tracklog and play back the trip
as seen from an aerial vantage point.

Another use of the track log is if you like to keep a journal or log of
your travels. You can look at the track log later and determine when
you were where, spot fuel and rest stops, see the elevations and speeds
at various places, and use the data to calculate things like moving
time, stopped time, average speeds, etc.
