I don't what the story might be. I own a Quest and a Quest II. Never
have had the first seconds trouble out of either. Only difference I can
tell is the full mapping in the Quest II.

Do they have voice instructions? That is a fairly new feature that can make
older designs without it less popular.

I just purchased a refurbished Quest from EBay for less than $300,
shipping included. The GPS appears brand new, or there is no
indication that it was refurbished. Unlike the printed box of a new
GPS, the box of a refurbished GPS is blank and plain white. Garmin
guarantes its refurbished product for 1 yr, just like a new GPS.

I have no problem with my Quest GPS after 1 week using it, but I wish I
could return it because its screen is too small and it has less
functions than a comparable Navman. Check out the Navman !

When I bought a "refurbished" GPS12 some years back, I was told that if a new
unit fails it's tests on the production line it is recycled through the
"refurb" process - For some reason, at least in the UK, they can't then sell
them as new. That would explain why it looks brand new - unless the refurb
included a new case and screen of course.
