GPS Coordinate conversion
|
|
|
| Hi,
I am reading raw NMEA data from a GPS device. My problem is that the
coordinates are in the wrong format.
The coordinates I read are in this format: Lat: 555074,3, Lon: 123413,8
But MapPoint needs them in this format: Lat: 55,84568, Lon: 12,56905
How do I convert? I need to use them in MapPoint
Thanks

http://www.easygps.com is a tool that allows you to convert formats. Not
good for batch updates, but...

You can also use "GPS Utility" for converting coordinates from one
format/datum/grid system to another - see www.gpsu.co.uk.
The "Batch File Converter", also available from that website, can be
used as a GPSU driver so as to convert data in batches of files.

| Have you tried "Advanced GPS for Microsoft Map Point"?

Yes I can think so. I tried the program in march, but it crashed on my
computer several times when I hit F6. So I gave it up.
http://franson.com/coordtrans also support batch conversions. I haven't
tried this program though.

| Henrik,
Strange, I would have expected the NMEA coordinates to look like this:
..=2E.,5550.743,N,01234.138,E,...
For conversions, see http://home.online.no/~sigurdhu/Deg_formats.htm
and look for
"From an NMEA 0183 sentence (Dm,H) to Degrees decimal-minutes
Hemisphere (D m H)", then look for "From Degrees decimal-minutes (D m)
to decimal-degrees (d)".

N 59=B056' E 10=B042' (WGS 84)
Size and shape of the Earth (WGS 84)?
Garmin MapSource map sizes?
Garmin GPSmap 276C, GPS 12 MAP and GPS III (PLUS)?

I suspect that you have a bad file download, a corrupted GPSU file or
an installation problem. If you send me your dataset file (that caused
the crash) by direct email, I will be able to advise you regarding
this problem.
