Hi all,

I'm new to gps world but I know how it works in his basis. Our enterprise
has troubles controlling a fleet of cars distributing merchandise around the
city and neighbourhoods. The basic question is "where the cars have been". I
suggested to use GPS to record the the actual route of the cars, and some
media to report the position in real time to our main offices. This "media"
could be either radio or cellular network. With the GPS coordinates we can
solve the problem of displaying, mapping and distance reports by our own
programming team. The point we need to maintain the project in the low cost.
I know there are companies selling this service in the USA. We are in
Mexico, it is possible we have such a service in the local market, but our
enterprise is small and short of cash for a premium service. I was thinking
the basic cost of a basic GPS handset is about $100. The only we need is
attach it to a cellular modem or a radio and contract the appropriate cell
or radio service. My questions are:
Is it available such GPS "packages" (I mean GPS-radio or GPS-cellphone
modem)?
Can you point me to some vendors of the appropriate equipment?

Any hint is welcomed
Thanks in advance

Sammy

I think you have left out some critical specifications.

How many vehicles do you have?
How often do you really need positions to be updated?
Are your vehicles/drivers already cell phone equipped?
If so, have you talked to your provider?
Do you have an idea of an acceptable cost per vehicle per month?
There will be a trade off between cost and functionality.
What is important to *YOU* ?

Have you done some Google searches?
Check out http://www.google.com/search? q=gps.../> hone&spell=1

My first hit was http://www.accutracking.com/
They *DO NOT* claim service in Mexico.
_BUT_ their pages seem "educational".

I claim *NO* GPS expertise -- as many on this forum will testify.
I do however understand *SPECMANSHIP* ;)

If you are asking the question "where have the cars been", then you
don't really need realtime tracking. A GPS logger with bluetooth would
be a much cheaper solution. Using a PDA, you can walk past the car,
upload the tracks, and display them at your convenience on Google
Earth.

The features I would look for:
o External power permanently connected to the car's 12V system
o A sensitive receiver like the Sirf III.
o Optional external antenna.
o Bluetooth class I (100M range)
o A month of logging
o Sealed from the elements

Although it doesn't have all of these features, the Wintec WBT-200 is
worth checking out. It might do the job for about $95.
