Author Get Road Type from Lat-Long

Hi,

I have a client who wants to analyse the types of roads his test
vehicles travel on.

We are happily logging GPS lat and long co-ordinates (and loads of
engine data) for each days trips, and want to batch process them later.

Does anybody know if there is a way to get the road type for a given
lat/long co-ordinate ?
(e.g. in UK : Motorway, A class road, B class road )
Ideally as a local application that I can call from the command line,
but a web service may also be usable.
Either called point-by-point, or feed in a whole trip in some way

Someone has suggested that Autoroute is a possibility ??

( We are currently using our own analysis application, written in
Borland Delphi, to produce graphs of engine speed, temp, etc. and draw
trip maps via Multimap and Google Maps API. )

Don't even know where to start !!

Thanks In Advance.

Tim.
