Author cross track error on Garmin Etrex Vista

I understand cross track error shows my distance versus the line connecting
two waypoints of a route : the one I just passed and the one I am going to.

But if I am not navigating a route, but just on a "Go To"navigation, where
is waypoint number 1 then and where is that course line then?
I suppose waypoint number 2 must be the destination of my GoTO.
Is waypoint number 1 then the place where I started the navigation ??

Maybe somebody could give me a link to some website explaining about this.
Thanks in advance for all hints

Your are right.
Waypoint number 1 or "the point from" is in this case the location,
where You execute "GOTO".
The course line is then fix from this location to your "GOTO
destination". The navigational data (cross track error; course/desired
track, ...) refer to this line.
If You want to refresh the course line and navigational data, then
execute GOTO "To destination" just a second time.

I recommend this website http://www.smallboatgps.com/ from John Bell.
Look for "Basic GPS Navigation".
