Use DeLorme Earthmate with MS Streets & Trips?
|
|

| I have the original DeLorme USB Earthmate. I no longer use Street
Atlas but changed to S&T for routing, etc. I have loaded the drivers
from DeLorme but Win XP Pro sees the GPS receiver as a Human Interface
Device and can't find it using scan for GPS. How to fix?

I don't know if your Earthmate is capable of sending NMEA data.
If not, you won't be able to use it with streets and trips.
If it can send NMEA data, then you need a special driver to make the
USB signal appear as if it was coming from a COM port. (NMEA is a
serial protocol). Once you've mapped the USB data to a virtual
COM port, MS Streets and Trips will recognize it.
The driver software at the link below might help you:

The Earthmate is NMEA only. He needs the Delorme Serial emulator
software.

If you are using Widows XP Pro x64 edition the Serial emulator software will
not work.

That's the driver I used. My system sees the GPS as a human interface
device instead of a GPS.

I have it and installed it. The system sees the Earthmate as a human
interface device rather than a GPS. That's the problem.

You have to turn a com port on and then set S&T to look at that port.
Get out of hardware Manager and open the Serial Emulator in the Task
Bar. Enable a port, set it for NMEA, the either let S&T rescan or
tell it what port to look at.

| Yup I did this with mine and it worked perfect. Not the best receiver but
they are not bad, was happy with mine before going with a SiRfIII.

| If yours is the "really old" flat serial Earthmate that runs on 4 AAA
batteries, then it's not NMEA compliant. You can only use it with DeLorme
products. All their GPS after that one (such as the LT-20), are NMEA
compliant. I suggest you upgrade to a newer NMEA GPS.

I installed the serial emulator. The OS is Vista Home.

The serial emulator doesn't put an icon on the task bar. Is there
another way to open the port dialog?

No icon on the task bar. How do I assign the port?[color=darkred]

It's the Earthmate USB, the one just before the LT-20

Look in the task manager and see if DelSerial.exe is running. If not,
then you need to start it. Once started, right click it and choose
Ports.

Here's a link to a bare GPS "mouse" product that is also offering S&T
as a companion product (implying at least that they are
compatible)....

| DeLorme has a USB to serial driver that will let S&T see the Earthmate.
You can download from the web site. Or call Delorme support. They are
very good.
