Advice needed RE: GPS unit

| Hi...
I bought 2 Garmin i3's last year.. not knowing that the unit would not only
need an annual update (or at least flash that pop up)... and that Garmin
would change policy and now require $75 a unit.. which for me is alot
considering my usage.
How are the competitors - Tom Tom, Magellin, etc? Are they just as
expensive to update? Do they need an annual update?
Do I have any alternatives? For now, the maps I have are more than
adequate, and I can live with that pop up if need be...
Thank you!

| TomTom's do not need to be updated, so it will work indefinitely with the
older maps.

| I don't think that you need to update. If you don't mind using the older
maps the units should still work fine indefinitely.

| Thank you both! I agree, I can certainly live with the maps I have - the
roads do change, but not that significantly - etc...
In the case of TomTom, what would be the cost of an updated map anyway?
Reason - I jumped too quickly when I bought these last year from Costco- the
price was good at the time- $250, but it has the wheel, which can annoying..
touchscreen is definitley the way to go.. so I guess over the next year or
so, if I come across something, it might accomplish 2 things- new map, new
interface.. and these units are dropping in price.. thanks!
