Author Cost-effective GPS module for Palm Treo AND laptop??

The advertising is confusing, so this newbie needs advice from
experts here or perhaps a forum online.

I need a GPS + maps (with world maps available) to use with my
Palm Treo 755p and also with my laptop. They are both Bluetooth
capable, but I don't mind a cable.

What's your opinion for something easy to use, reliable, and
useful all over the world?

Thanks!

The Palm is the hard bit but any BT GPS and the use of Ozi Explorer (check
webpage for Palm listings) would give you the chance to use world wide. You
can get a Garmin GPS 10 and use the products then download user created
(read as freeware) maps for most places but not much will give you world
wide turn by turn navigation if that is what you are asking.

Ozi? Garmin GPS10? Thanks.
I do not need turn-by-turn anywhere, just the ability to know
where we are. Ten years ago my wife and I used a monochrome
handheld while visiting in Italy. Despite the problem of finding
enough satellites (tall buildings, narrow streets), it was a
terrific resource with the ability to get us back to the hotel,
and back to places we wanted to revisit.

Ozi does not appear to be Palm-compatible at this time...

What are the best alternatives to Ozi?

Uh oh sorry GlobalMapper is great for Tablet/Notepad

for PDA - Pathaway www.pathaway.com

Also has the ability for you to acquire, calibrate (Geo-reference) and upload
your own maps.

Thanks, Neville...

I've downloaded pathaway, and despite my relative
ignorance am very impressed.

Now I'm shopping for a gps module, and evidently Garmin
is a good choice. Or is it?

The Garmin mobile one is top quality and has the good chipset but you may
have to pay for software you won't use unless you can get one unbundled. I
got the earlier model GPS10 because of the water resistance, I'm fairly
happy with it. For non boating there are a lot of cheaper alternatives which
have the same result. Look for the chipset and battery life, the rest is
fairly moot. I have seen models that use a Nokia battery which would be a
big plus if it lasts a few years as replacement would be a lot easier.
