Could anyone tell me if they all work out of the box ? as im on a trip to
florida and thought id pick one up there with all the usa maps on it,

TT1 Version 'New Edition' sold by Amazon works right out of box.

Yes they work 'out of the box'. Plug into the cigarette lighter,
switch on, follow the brief setup procedure and wait for a satellite
fix.

Don't most LION powered devices (cell phones, cameras etc.) say to
charge 12 hours before first use?

Yes but your battery is still charging while you are using it assuming you
are still plugged into the 12v socket.

Maybe, but I took the question about 'working out of the box' to refer to
the possibility of having to go on-line to activate the software, or
somesuch - which you do *not* have to do.
