Why can't my Garmin NUVI 200 read custom maps?
|

| I am new to the GPS scene. I recently purchased a NUVI 200. I have
some custom .img maps that I would like to add to my NUVI. I created a
folder called "garmin" on my SD card. I copied a few maps to the
folder. Turned off/on my GPS but the damn thing still won't see the
new maps.
IMG2GPS program doesn't work as it does not see my GPS via USB.
What do I need to do to upload custom Garmin maps to my NUVI 200 and
make the device read them?

I don't have that GPS but the other Garmin GPS receivers that will use
supplemental maps stored on a memory card all look for a file named
gmapsupp.img. And the file is usually in a \garmin folder as you have
yours.
Also, on the ones I've used there is a map setup or map info menu or
page where you have to select which mapping you want to see from the
available choices. Only one supplemental mapping product can be seen at
a time.

Ah, yes, that's what it is. I used the IMG2GPS to create a
gmapsupp.img and put it in the folder. Now it sees it and works great!
It took forever to figure this one out. No documentation from Garmin.
Thanks.

| If you've got the patience to answer one from another new owner
(Garmin 650), now that I see how to create a map for use on Garmin
units, how does one go about getting other non-Garmin maps?
Many thanks,
Bob

What kind of supplemental maps would you add?

|
| since there are some obvious Nuvi experts on this post, does anyone have
a spreadsheet or DB converter to make your own favorites and put them on
an SD card??
