Hi,

I have just bought a TomTom 720 T

I plugged it into my PC and updated it.

Backed it up.

Switched it off and unplugged it from the cradle.

Now when I power it up it loads, the progress bar moves to the right.

Then a white cross in a red circle appears and it just hangs.

I have pressed the rest button and used TomTom Home to restore the
backup.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks

Hi - try this: Disconnect your 720 from desktop computer. Un-install
TomTom Home from your desktop and reboot.
Dock your TomTom and reinstall TT Home from the CD that came with it and let
it do its thing. Somehow, the update installation script got corrupted.
This process should bring you back to where you were at before the update.
Once you're up and running again, disconnect your 720 from the desktop,
reboot your computer, and reconnect the 720. TT Home will once again alert
you to the update, go ahead and run the update again.

I'm giving you this by memory, I don't have my 720 any more. Hope it works.

One more thing - in case you don't know, when you disconnect your 720 from
your desktop, there are certain precautions to take, like any other USB
devices that you want to disconnect from your desktop. Before you pull the
plug, you have to open Windows Explorer and right click the drive letter or
name assigned to your TT GO 720, and select [EJECT]. Failing to do this
could result in system lockups on the 720 and system instability on your
desktop.

Hope this help. Have a nice day.

Thanks for taking the time to answer my query.

I took the unit back first thing this morning and they exchanged it for
a new one.

But the new one wont communicate with my PC via the USB cradle!

The first time I plugged it in I got a screen that said connect to PC
YES / NO

I was able to open 'my computer' and copy everything from the TT (the
G: drive) to a backup folder on my PC.

Occasionally when I plug the device into my PC I get balloon messages
saying that the USB device has malfunctioned - but the message never
stays up long enough for me to read..

Have I blown the USB port on the TT 720T?

I have uninstalled TT Home and reinstalled it.

The green light on the cradle is lit so power is getting to the TT720

the TT720 is operating as it does out of the cradle, I can move through
the options etc.

yesterday with the other unit when it was in the cradle I couldn't do
anything on the TT screen..

I can not now see a G: drive in my computer.

To test the USB port on my laptop I copied a folder of files from the PC
to a pen stick and back to the PC and it works. This may not be a
comprehensive test of the USB port on my PC but it seams to be working.

I thought this was suppose to be easy.

Thanks for this info. I should have guess this as its a USB device but I
didn't. So thanks for the info.

I did power the TT down before I removed it from the cradle. Hopefully
this will prevent 'damage' of some sort!

BUT do you think I have damaged the TT somehow? Or have I just got a
'glitch'?

Thanks for any help.

Update to saga.

With a bit of research on goggle I got it working.

So all was well for a bit.

I updated the application to the latest version via TT home as it
recommended and the original problem I had with the other unit was back.

A white cross in a red circle after the power-up progress bar reached
the right hand side.

I tried to restore the back up I made (in TT Home) before I did any
update.

That didn't work.

But I had copied the entire TT 720 memory (G: Drive) to a folder on my
PC using Windows Explorer.

So I copied ALL the original files to the 720 and it now works again.

So there is an issue with the latest application release with the two
units I have just had.

This means I cant update my unit at all.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

thanks

I read somewhere that if you use the install CD, you have problems like
you're having. Supposedly you need to connect the TT (w/o any Home SW on
your computer) and Windows will recognize it, then you will link to their
software site and DL the right SW. Maybe something is wrong with the install
CDs???? Not sure but maybe???

I had the same problem. Nospam's solution was the only way to solve
the problem. Thank you very much. So what is the problem? New software
developments of TomTom Home don't comply with the existing TomTom 720.
Does it means we cannot download new updates of the maps. I don't
think so. So I strongly recommend to make distinction between updates
of TomTom Home and others. I will not upgrade my existing and working
version of TomTom Home but will download or upgrade other updates. You
can unselect the box of TomTom Home when it offers to upgrade e newer
version. Thank you TomTom Home!!!

If you didn't backup your device, please do it immediately, because it
is so vital! TomTom Home gives you oppurtunity of backup or while your
TomTom 720 is connected to your computer, open windows explorer, find
tomtom 720 and click it. Then select all files of tomtom 720 and copy
them to your pc. You should creat a file under C before doing that!

If you have any knd of problem in the future, perhaps Nospam's
solution may rescue your expensive but useful device from going to the
garbage.

You are not exactly right.
My Nokia tablet (Debian based) is usb hotplug.
To transfer data from PC to memory card I can have it hotplugged/
unplagged any time, waiting for data transfer to complete to avoid
corrupted files only.
If your TomTom 720 is not hot plug&play, there must be something wrong
with usb voltage levels.

Hi guys,
I just bought a 720 friday night. played with it saturday and did all
the updates and backups and unfortunately updated TomTom Home as well.
Won't do it again. Same thing happened to me. Didn't want to piss
with it so I just took it back, told them what happened and they
replaced it. Problem solved. I also won't update HOME until they can
promise it works properly with 720.
