Laptop-Based Map Suggestions?

| I've got a laptop with a couple USB ports on it.
I'd like to use it to play with a GPS-enabled map application and
maybe a little WAR driving using NetStumbler and WiFi card that I
already have on it.
No practical application - just fooling around.
I'm guessing a hard-wired GPS receiver is the way to go - with a
preference for one that gets it's power from the USB port - since
the thing will probably live on the dashboard and the laptop on
the passenger seat or floor...
Am I on the right track with the hard-wired-USB-powered part?
Can anybody recommend a GPS receiver and a WindowsXP-compatible
application?

The Holux GR-213 is a good "mouse style" GPS receiver. It will draw its
power from the USB port and has good sensitivity and speed with the SiRF
III chip set.
The GR-213 is most commonly found with a USB connector (the serial to
USB adapter is built into the cable) and you can usually get them for
less than $50.00 or so.
There is another version of the GR-213 that has a PS/2 connector and
uses various adapter cables (via the PS/2 connector) to adapt it to USB
ports, hardware RS-232 serial ports, and power and data adapter cables
for a number of different PDAs. This model is a little harder to find
but it is the most versatile as far as being able to use it almost
anywhere.

I have Deluo USB GPS. It came with Microsoft Streets and Trips. I got
it from Newegg for about $70.
It works as advertised.
