Continent vs country vs city map detail

| Hello, confused newbie here.
BACKGROUND:
Am learning about GPS units to select, purchase and use on the road in
extended vacation in Italy in Fall.
Saw in another thread in a GPS NG that North America and Europe each fit
into about 1GB storage. One answer had a link to a page indicating sizes of
different maps. (Can't find thread or specific message anymore.)
What triggered this note is that the page mentioned a continent's map takes
up about 1 GB, then listed "Map of Italy" at 512MB.
QUESTION:
Is a continent's map not as complete/detailed as a country map? Should I be
looking for units where I can put in an SD card with country (or smaller
region) map(s)?
Thanks for your help.

It's a pity you can not point to the page in question.

Was the map 512 MB or was the map just delivered on a 512 MB SD? Does the
map of Italy come accompanied by a map of the major roads of all Europe?

The level of detail should be the same, but a map of all Europe will not
need to be accompanied by (or attached to) a map of major roads of the
other European countries.

Generally the continent map will show only the major roads. The country
map will show the major road, the byroads and the minor roads.
