Author Removing POI categories

Is there any way to *remove* POI categories that come part of Tom
Tom's "One"? I want to replace some of the standard categories (e.g.
shops, hotels and law courts) with my own custom categories, since the
standard ones are pretty useless.

Yes, but only if you remove them *all* - 'cos they're all in one file (I
foregt *which* file - but somebody will know). But that won't get you any
additional custom categories. Mind you, with v6 firmware you can have 100
custom categories - which is probably enough. So it's probably best just to
ignore the built-in categories, and use yours instead. Perhaps you could
identify yours easily by (say) starting the category names with a $.

A "single" file? I feared as much.

Is there a way to edit the single file with POI Edit or a similar
program, maybe taking out the unwanted POIs and leaving the useful
ones?

I suspect that the words "If it ain't broke, don't try to fix it" are
marching (with well-deserved wisdom) in the direction of this thread,
but there are a great many inaccurate or simply pointless POIs shipped
with TomTom's One. It's not so much SD space but rather screen estate
in menus that I'd like to clear up.

Your suggestion of using a symbol e.g. $ to distinguish built-in from
custom categories is a good one and I will try it if all else fails.

Well, I suppose that it's got to be *possible* because someone (TomTom)
created the file in the first place - and, after all, it only contains
data.

Trouble is that it's not the usual POI (.ov2) format - and I haven't come
across any tools for unscrambling and editing it. A nice little project for
somebody perhaps?

It's already been done, POI.dat is the file name. I can't locate the
discussion at the moment but it has been done!

Interesting - thanks!

Any idea where the list of category numbers can be found?
