Need a Topo map with GPS tracking abilitiy for Treo 700P or any other Palm based PDA/Smartphone

| I have TomTom Navigator 6 on my Treo 700p using a OnCourse Edition 2 (BTS
395?) Blue Tooth reciever. It works nicely.
Now I am in need of a Topo mapping software, preferably USGS map based, that
will allow tracking and way points. It does not need A to B routing. I
will be using it while hiking in several western US states. Currently I am
running into a problem of battery life on the Treo. It seems that when the
BT GPS is running with the Treo the Treo's battery will only last about an
hour. I don't know if this is caused by the BT connection, the TomTom
software or some other reason. I plan to buy an external power source that
uses 4 AA batteries to solve this. But I'm wondering if the issue can be
solved with a certain mapping program using less power?
Any recommendations would be appreciated.

This can be done by any raster map program like Oziexplorer, Fugawi or
any similar one.

One reason of power consumtion is, that the map will be displayed
always and the view is updated when changing the position. If I
understand you correctly, it's sufficient to record the track and
display the current position from time to time.
Since tracking can be done without using the display, you might be
able to switch it off, and turn it on, to check the current position
only.
I don't know the hardware that you mentioned therefore I don't have a
certain recomendation for a specific software.
