Hi there!

I want to be able to read the Garmin internal unit ID from a program
(not from the menu), but how can this be done?

I'm assuming you mean with a program other than MapSource. I'm guessing
you already knew that MapSource would do it.

Another way might be to go at least part way through the My Garmin
product registration or MapSource unlock process I think.

I don't think the unit I.D. info is included in the info in the NMEA
handshake or startup strings is it?

Then there are some SiRF chip set utilities and maybe even the Garmin
utilities used for the GPS-18 receivers.

You are correct. Sorry I didn't mention it. =8-}

I really should have written: *from a program I intend to program
myself*, should I...

Some units don't send out NMEA (think of a Quest), so it probably
should be in native Garmin commands.

If they can be called externally and return the unit ID, fine, but I
guess they won't. But I'll look into it!

Anyone with Garmin command codes?

The interface spec is on the Garmin website:
http://www.garmin.com/support/commProtocol.html
Download the SDK zip file - the spec is the pdf file.
