I've just learned about the exciting new outdoor sport of geocaching. It
looks really interesting, and I'd like to get into it.

Tell me, are any of the GPS units at
http://www.review-a-gadget.com/Portable_GPS.php suitable?

Nope they are all overpriced you can get them for a much better price elsewhere.

I don't know, but there are some decent reviews at
http://www.geocaching.com. Better still, there are FAQs and discussions
of the GPS features that are most useful for geocaching. It's also got
a lot of caches in Oz, too. Lastly -- and forgive me for being a bit of
a noodge, but I don't know what your level of outdoor
experience/map-and-compass clue is -- make sure you read
http://www.geocaching.com/about/finding.aspx and follow the safety
guidelines. A GPS isn't a Star Trek transporter unit, it's no guarantee
that you won't get lost, and it won't help you get found again if you
lack a map and the clue to use it.

Have tons of fun,

The eXplorists come with geocache managing software. You can
download cache points from the popular sites like
http://www.geocaching.com and then 'install' them on the
eXplorist.

This allows you to save many caches. When you go looking for one,
not only does it point to the target location, but it also lets
you browse text 'hints' that provide details about the cache.

You'll want an eXplorist 210 or above because they have a port
that lets you upload the cache data.

I'm not familiar with Garmin, but I'm sure they have similar
functionality.

Hi Mary,

Oh, that's a lovely post. Yes, I've just been set right with link to
www.geocaching.com It's an amazing site, really well put together by some
very talented enthusiasts. You're right, there are lots of caches hidden in
and around West Oz. Geocaching is just as popular here as anywhere it seems.

No, you're not being a noodge at all. I'm happy to report that I have
absolutely no experience with a map and compass whatever. That's something
I'll have to work on I imagine. Safety is a very genuine concern where I
live too. It's pretty sparsely populated and there aren't a lot of places
where you can find a drink. If you stuff-up you can dehydrate pretty quickly
in our climate. The big thing here is water. Take way more water than you'll
ever need. I'll also give the safety guidelines at
http://www.geocaching.com/about/finding.aspx a look at also, just to make
sure there isn't anything else I need to consider.

Happy geocaching!

Regards,
Murray R. Van Luyn.

Hi Jim,

Thanks very much for your post. I was sort of leaning toward some of the
less expensive Magellan units myself. I'm not too sure how they compare with
the Garmin models myself just yet. I do like the idea of being able to
upload a bunch of closely situated cache points, and then go off trekking
for a day or two. Should probably think about a spare set of batteries if I
go that far.

Regards,
Murray R. Van Luyn.

I am bright enough , sunshine.

The basic fact is that regardless of whether this person you are whining
about is in West Aust or anywhere else , he does not post or spam in
wa.general , so your bullshit shouldn't have be crossposted to this Ng ,
wa.general , it should have been posted to the Ngs that has been spammed.

And as I have said before , you stuffed up and thought wa.general is a US Ng
, admit it and then move on with your sad and pathetic life.
