| Hello,
When the iPAQ 6515/Tomtom5 is working, it is of course great.
But the following happens altogether too often.
Suddenly, the display shows that I'm some distance away, say 50, 100m from
where I really am. The problem is that the unit does not correct itself.
The most egregious case is that I'll be on an expressway, travelling at 80
mph and the unit shows I'm in a field off to the right. The unit spends its
time computing an itinerary to get me back to the expressway. This involves
finding a path to the next entrance ramp of course. Because I'm going 80
mph (a bit fast for someone in a field I think) my position is changing
rapidly and the unit is constantly recomputing. It usually does not correct
itself for a very long time.
What seems to work best for me is to turn it off, drive about 1/2 km to 1km
and then turn it on again. As I am very far from the previously recorded
position, Tomtom determines my position (correctly, every time!) and
concludes I'm on the correct route.
This is an amusing inconvenience on an expressway where I'm likely to have
to go an hour before having to make a decision, but in the city this is a
real drag!
I'm certain of the above. What follows is very sketchy.
One day I was in area A, in the country, on a plain, no mountains, big
buildings or other obstructions. This problem manifested itself constantly
(just for the record, most of the time the unit works fine, the behavior
above being quite infrequent). A couple of months later, I return to area
A, and the problem again surfaces. On both days it's so bad, the unit is
useless.
Can anyone explain this?
TIA
