| Its a great way to search for places but I don't see that many units
offering this feature.

I'm not aware of *any*!
Just what do you want it to do - take you to an individual subscriber's
house, or just to the centre of an area covered by a specified area code?

A POI database available from pocketgpsworld.com contains UK area dialling
codes.

How does that help navigation? My area code (01926) covers an area with
about a 10 mile radius, centred roughly on Warwick. If I tried to navigate
to 01926, where would the GPS take me?

It doesn't. I was just saying it existed. Seems pretty useless to me.

The only way I can see it being be useful is if the phone numbers were
linked to addresses.
For instance, if you knew the phone number of a person or a business you
could type in that phone number and it would display the address. It
would be a nightmare to maintain a current database for the entire
population of country, but for businesses it would work.
Many POI databases already have phone numbers for businesses included.
For instance, I have an eXplorist GPS loaded with Magellan's Mapsend Topo.
If I click on a hotel or restaurant POI icon, I get a screen with the
full name of the place, the address the post/zip code, and the phone
number and FAX number if any.
Despite having these phone numbers in the POI database, Magellan has no
provisions for searching them. I don't know of any units that offer this
feature.

Idem for GARMIN Nüvis and StreetPilot units which have in database millions
of POI with full adress incl. phone numbers. No unit (nor the PC software)
offers a search by phone number except the ones with BlueTooth capacities.
Some GPS with BlueTooth connectivities allowed to restrict search to POI
with phone numbers , but no from a specific/part of a phone number. Also,
these units allowed look for phone number in the compatible cell phone, but
this is more a function of the cell-phone rather than a function of the GPS.
How strange is sameone who better remembers phone numbers than names of
peoples, places or locations !
Is this phone number database connected to phone-call-center business or
home-call marketing activities ?

You understand that this would provide reverse-directory capabilities,
don't you ? If you knew a phone number you could find out which building
it belonged to, and who lived or worked there. The POIs that come with my
GPS unit don't include private addresses, but even reverse-directory
capability for businesses is normally a service which costs many thousands
of pounds a year.
