Smallest basic GPS?
|
|
|
| I occasionally need a basic GPS for things like finding my car in a big
parking lot or just getting oriented to a previously marked waypoint.
I use an Explorist 300 for this, but would like something much smaller.
Is there anything out there like a keyfob GPS?

| I just bought a refurb Garmin Geko 201 off eBay for $50. I have wanted
one for years to toss into sweetie's purse for the same reasons. Now,
with RoboGEO and a new camera, I find it even handier.
Bigger than a fob, but still tiny.

| Hello Rex,
Why not use a tiny GPS mouse such as the excellent and more or less
waterproof one of TomTom with the SiRF III antenna, in combination with your
mobile phone and a simple GPS app in the mobile? Very small/lightweight,
very fast.

I use Garmin Foretrex 201 for such purposes. Just take out the
wristband...

Hmmm, that may be just the ticket. Thanks!

I had no idea that was possible.
My current phone is a Motorola V557.
Can I add GPS software to that?
Can you point me to additional information?

| Hello Rex:
Some mobiles already have a GPS antenna already built in, and many more are
promised to come on the market. I for example have a Nokia 6680 with Symbian
as an operating system, with no built-in receiver; I use the latest TomTom
GPS receiver (via Bluetooth, works just fine, fast and very sensitive -
trees, anywhere in the car, partly even in the house! It catches up to 20
satellites)., in combination with the excellent AFtrack software
http://www.afischer-online.de/sos/AFTrack/
In that package you can choose a mobile number out of your contact list to
be the one that receives position SMS at settable intervals. You can choose
between 2 types of SMS. The SMS contains then the date, the time and the
position.
The GPS receiver is only 70 grams, the recharchable battery lasts approx. 10
hours and the device is more or less waterproof (the phone is not! Alas!).
There is a nice whole where you can feed a string through and then attach
the thing with a hook to your clothing etc. The lowest price I could get was
approx. 80 euros.
Be aware that such use will strain the battery of your mobile faster.
I suppose that for other types of smartphones (like Windows mobile) there
will be comparable software. www.handango.com is a good place to start. For
Nokia there is the excellent www.aikon.ch with some 1000 titles half of
which are games though ;=( (a shame to spoil our short time on earth with
games, is my private opinion ;=)
