Thanks Burnie. I suppose that they are very useful in Australia as cell
phone coverage is probably far from 100%. I have added the MT410G to the
article.

No Andreas. I've considered getting a phone with both satellite and
GSM functionality, which would cost about the same as ELB - except for
the monthly. I've more often found myself in urgent situations where
I would just like to talk to somebody, rather than dire situations
where I'd pull the pin on a ELB, bringing in SAR. I'm holding out
until I can get a sat/GSM handset with built-in GPS which would allow
me to SMS my location.

Doug,
As far as I could find out, only Thuraya has such phones, but they have no
coverage in the US.

YES I carry and market the ACR PLB-300 MicrOFix. We travel in remote
areas of Idaho. There is no cell coverage. There is no HAM coverage
in the canyons. Satellite phones only work on the ridges or canyons
running north and south.
We update the beacon registration data before each trip -
https://beaconregistration.noaa.gov...nerLogi
n
On the registration form we leave all current data - vehicle location,
travel plan and schedule and complete data on all individuals
involved.
We have never activated a beacon.
In 40 years we have been rescued once after 14 days of being snowed
in. We brought in SAR to aid in the location of a lost hunter on
another trip.
If you are ever in Idaho, stop in for a demonstration and a detailed
discussion.
