Which GPS software works best on a tabley PC?
|

| Hi guys,
I'm not really new to the principle of Sat/Nav but in the past I have
always used a PDA with a wired GPS mouse for use in a car. What I am
thinking of trying now is a Compact flash GPS receiver in a tablet PC
running win2K Pro. A P3 @ 400mhz (Yes, I know it's carp, lol)
The trouble is, I don't know what kind of software works on a laptop
type device to give the same turn by turn, voice directions and map
view as stuff like Tom-Tom on a PDA does.
I'd be gratefull for any info.
Cheers,
Steve.
PS... if it makes any difference, I'm in England.

I use GlobalMapper as my software and a Holux model GR213 GPS (from Ebay
for about $US20. Works perfectly. I load the Army 1:250K Topo maps into
the Fujitsu Stylistic 3500 tablet (Win 2K) and in inland Australia it is
accurate to a couple of metres. Dunno if you are going to get software to
talk to you without proprietary maps loaded onto the tablet and these may
be hard to come by.
If I am going somewhere that is new I just add a point with a label to the
map near to the turn-offs.

Hi Neville,
Thanks for the reply.
That was way to complicated for me to get my head round.
I must admit I was thinking more along the lines of a version of Tom-
Tom or Destinator.
That sort of thing.
It's just that as far as I can see, most of them seem to be aimed at
PDA users, not lappies or tablets.
Cheers,
Steve

You may know more than I (we) do, but from what I know there are server
very cheap GPS devices those work with just about any computer that you can
have some map with GPS supported installed, and connection (usually USB)
then you will have lappies (I have no idea what Taplets is except the taplet
device like Wacom taplet).
Also, some version MS Street & Trip bundles with a similar GPS device that
should work with any computer you can put on your lap.
