Thanks for replies to date. I need to supply further information for you
guys.

I do voluntary work for the local bush fire service and often need to travel
way off normal roads and the Garmin unit I currently have is useless in this
situation.

Hence the reason for detailed mapping in these circumstances. I have access
to excellent outback maps.

I now have the answer to a suitable inverter (300 watt), but am wondering
about a small LCD monitor suitably mounted in my vehicle, rather than on the
passengers seat.

these can be mounted in the dash nowadays.

No direct experience, but with all the little LCD panels available for
SUV DVD players and game systems, I would think a 7" screen ought to be
a simple matter to source and connect. I'd check with one of the audio
specialist shops.
Be sure to report back when you come up with something
