| I recently purchased this model and used it on a trip last week. It worked
quite well. My questions have to do with the memory card slot. Is it
necessary to by the Garmin labeled cards or will all aftermarket cards work?
I'm not interested in the MP3 or electronic book capabilities. What will be
gained by extra memory? To navigate in the the continental US are the
standard maps sufficient or should I consider any of the mapsource upgrades.
Thanks for any and all help.

| NO, you do not need a Garmin labeled card. Almost any SD card of good
quality will do. Some threads on the GPSPASSION website for garmin claim
that it will take up to 4MB, I use it with a 2MB card from corsair (not the
most well-known brand) without any troubles in my Nuvi 350..
The card is mostly used for MP3 songs, Audio books, and JPGs. It is NOT
needed for anything else. It will not provide any improvements in GPS
capabilities. IIRC, you can use it to store extra POIs but have never done
so.

It seems to me one of the best uses of the SD slot is if you travel outside
the country and purchase pre-loaded maps. If you take a trip to Europe, for
example, you can buy an SD card with pre-loaded maps of all of Europe. You
do not have to laod them into your unit's main memory. When you finish the
trip, you can re-sell the card! ;-)

Almost all cards of that standard will work. I think there's a limit of
2Gig.

Ability to load maps of other areas, and more Points Of Interest.

get perfect coverage for any device. The MapSource upgrades /are/ the
standard maps: same data. The only reason to buy MapSource would be after
a few years when the map built into your unit has become obsolete. Of
course, by then there may be better units out there.
