Is there anyone able to download maps from the Mapopolis website? Are they
off the market for good? Could anyone advice on where this type of maps are
available on the net? TIA

I have been downloading maps from here...

http://www.mapopolis.com/mapstore.j...92218432&p=&q=8

I can only download 2 counties at a time of the demo maps. They make
you wait a while before you can download more... or you have to dial
in again. I suspect they are keying off your IP address... one of the
few advantages of dial up!!! :^P

I don't know if they work since I don't have my Palm yet. I should
have it by next week and will report back on whether they work.

BTW, I may have a way to get around the demo limitation...

But, are any of these maps PPC compatible? and are they the demo version or
the Navigator version, I was able to download a Demo version last night but
they only last 10 days before expiration.

Demo maps are useless with a gps...they don't work.

There is a crack out on the net that will allow the demo maps to work
indefinitely. I used to have it but deleted it, but be careful when using
cracks because one of the cracks I downloaded had a virus in it.

I know this is not much help but I have about 6 full US states (not demo)
that I regularly travel to. If you want them I will post to usenet.

Do they then work with a gps unit?

I loved using Mapopolis but now swtiched to TomTom 6 which is MUCH more
advanced and easier to use and much more rich in content. Plus it has 3D,
you can download celeb voices and you can store the entire US on a 1gb SD
card. TomTom also turns the PPC Bluetooth feature on and off automatically.

If you like Mapopolis, I HIGHLY reccomend switching to Tom Tom.

Here's a site with the Mapopolis crack:

http://crackzplanet.com/mapopolis/ ... d_cracked.html

There are other ones out there if you Google for it.

PS... I only have NY,NJ, FL, GA, AR, LA, MS, NC, VA, TX maps.

I don't know the answer to PegLeg's question b/c I have only used the files
with my iPAQ and Bluetooth GPS receiver.

PS>>>>

I also have Major Roads for all 50 states as well (PA included).

Yes, they do. I was not aware that the demo maps would not work with
a GPS. Seems rather pointless to have a demo that won't actually
work!!!

The crack is not a program, it is a modification to the map file. One
bit has to be flipped from a 1 to a 0. The bit is not in the same
place in each file as the headers seem to have a variable format. I
used a text editor that has capability of displaying and editing data
in hex mode. The bit to be flipped is in the last byte of four
consecutive 0x01 bytes. It should be changed to a 0x00 byte. I have
only found a single occurance of four consecutive 0x01 bytes in any
given file, but to be sure, I always look for the copyright notice to
be about 40 bytes later in the file.

The issue I have with Mapopolis is that the maps are fairly large and
I can't even fit an entire state in the 25 MB I have available on my
Palm. I have not tried to put any on an SD card yet. Will the
program find them if I do that? Is there a special directory to put
them in?

In reality, I don't think Mapopolis is that good of a program. I can
see why it was discontinued if they weren't going to update it.
Actually, I don't care for using the Palm as a GPS receiver in
general. I find the bluetooth connection to be inconvenient. Every
time I start the program (others as well as Mapopolis) I have to click
three or four buttons to tell it to connect and have to repeat this
every time it disconnects. Also, it does not warn you if it looses
the connection, at least in a way that catches my attention. Finally,
the screen on the Zire 72 is not very easy to see in daylight. The
sun washes it out horribly. In my car I usually see all the dust that
lands on the screen much easier than the display.

I believe that the program creates a folder in the program files folder
where you can install your maps, but in your case with the lack of space
you can also install them in any folder on a SD card and just select what
folder you want Mapopolis to look in.

I really like it in my Ppc XV6700 works great with the Bluetooth receiver
with no problems of connectivity, if it looses the BT connection it will
read Connected but no fix, as far as the screen well all that depends of
your unit, I have a no glare screen and seems to help some how.

That said please report any progress on your search. :)

Nemo,

I ditched my Palm about 3 years ago and the last model I used was the M105.
Windows XP will let you explore and copy files on a mobile device and/or its
SD card (on PocketPC at least). Try clicking on My Computer>Mobile Device
and see what comes up. Then try navigating to your SD card using Explorer
and copy the map files directly to it.

I'm even using an older iPAQ h1940 and TomTom runs great on it. It might be
time to upgrade my friend, you'll be glad you did.
