Garmin 60CSX PC cable?
|
|
|
| Greetings,
Does Garmin 60CSX come with a PC interface cable?
Or does it need to be purchased separately?
I would like to download maps off the CD.

Mine came with a USB cable, as did the Forerunner, Edge and BMW
Navigator. Garmin seems to have excess stock of those cables :-)

And it's a standard USB "A" to "mini-B" connector.

OK. Question, what are some useful accessories to get for it?
I am thinking DC power adapter? What else?

Be aware that the unit will take power through the USB cable when
connected to a PC.
You'll certainly need maps for your region. I bought the "Auto
Navigation Kit", which included City Navigator, the beanbag dashboard
mount and a car power cable (cigarette lighter plug).
The 60CSx comes with only a 64MB micro-SD card, so you'll probably
want to buy a bigger one; all the maps of City Navigator North
America v8 fit on a single 2GB card.

The mini-USB cables are pretty much all the same but the Garmin cables
have a ferrite bead Radio Frequency Interference (RFI) suppressor built
into the cable (the "lump" in the cable). If you get a cable without
that you may experience some interference around PCs, PDAs, and other
electronic devices.
You can get a variety of AC and DC power adapters from third party
vendors. Those allow you too run the GPS off of external power and save
the batteries when you have external power available.
The round four pin connector on the back of the GPS has two pins for the
RS-232 serial output and two pins for a 12-35VDC external power source.
So you can get a cable that has the round four pin connector on one
and and a plug on the other that will plug into the DC outlets found on
cars, boats, etc.
You can also get that same cable with bare wire pigtails so that you can
hardwire it into a boat, motorcycle, airplane, etc. That cable will
also have a pair for getting the RS-232 output out of the receiver
And you can provide external power via the mini-USB connector. That is
a 5VDC input from a USB outlet on a PC or it can be one of the AC or DC
adapters that have a USB socket and provide a regulated 5VDC output.
The mini-USB connector on the 60/76 Cx/CSx models is not an extremely
robust connector so I only use it for external power at a PC or places
where the GPS can be laid to one side and not handled a lot.
The mini-USB connector sticks straight out at a right angle to the back
of the GPS, I find that to be a little bit in the way at times. I have
a small right-angle mini-USB adapter (made by Motorola for their cell
phones) that makes the cable lay flatter.
Gilsson sells a padded neoprene case with a clear screen protector that
is good for protecting the screen and getting a little additional
padding on the case. They make that in different styles for both the 60
and 76 series.
Then there are external antennas. But I don't think I would be too
concerned about getting one of those. I've not found anyplace yet where
I've needed one.
eBay is a good place to browse all the different accessories that are
available.
Then, if you have a real big budget, you can start looking at cars,
boats, motorcycles, ATVs, and other places to use it... :> )

FYI, there is a "In the box" tab located here.

| Thanks for the info.
Also, what's a good source of 2GB cards?
