Author TomTom One XL update issues

Have become aware of a couple of instances here in AUS where people with new
TomTom One XL units have connected to TomTom Home and been offered updates,
however, the updates have caused some of the map files to be corrupted.
Apparently, the update download offered is an older file than that already
in the unit on its release.

Even though a TomTom Home prompted back-up was done before installing the
update, the restore function in TomTom Home has not returned the unit to its
pre-update state, making the TomTom One XL unusable.

Can I suggest to anyone with a new TomTom that as soon as you take it out of
the box (separate to any option TomTom Home offers) create a folder on your
hard drive and name it something (e.g. Original TomTom files) then copy all
of the files from your TomTom device (or SD card) into that folder. It's a
little insurance so you know if there is a major problem, you can fully
restore the unit back to original.

Cheers.

Well that's a great idea....but it's too late for me. I just updated
my TOMTOM One US-Canada that I got in Feb. 07 an it's a paper weight
now. Sent an email to support and I am currently waiting for a reply.
Does anyone know the fix from TOMTOM support.
Thanks
Larry

Well I don't know about a fix, but the problem will quite possibly be a
corrupt file in the 'US-Canada' map folder.

You will have to contact TomTom Support and negotiate whether you can
download the map off the website (which you will have to pay for) then be
recredited.

Before doing that (although it's a long shot) try to return to the point of
sale with your device and receipt in hand, then ask if you can try the SD
card from their demo unit in your TomTom to see if it fires up. That will
confirm it is a corrupt file on your card. I would then ask them to copy the
contents of the demo unit card onto your TomTom SD card. Explain that its
the easiest way, otherwise they would have to send the whole unit away to
TomTom for a warranty repair .... when it is only an SD card issue.

Most stores have policies in place where they will not copy the contents of
a card, however, if they are copying from like units with proof of purchase
straight onto a genuine TomTom SD card - I can't understand the problem.
Good luck.

That's why I posted the suggestion in the hope people would read it before
doing updates.

That might not work. Each SD card has a unique serial number. Most
mapping data that is preloaded to cards is "married" to that specific
card and will not work on another.

That might not be the case for TomTom but I'd be surprised if it were
not. Otherwise the mapping could be freely copied and distributed.

With TomTom you can use any map version - so long as it has been activated
on your device with a unique Product Code. The product code is supplied by
TomTom and is generated from the unique Device Code of your unit.

So long as you were using say version 675.1341 AUS maps and they had already
been activated on your device with a product code, you can insert any other
SD card with version 675.1341 AUS maps and it will function.

If however, you inserted a SD Card with say a newer or older map version, it
will ask for the map to be activated with a Product Code - which obviously
you would not have since your Product code is for version 675.1431 maps.

Well here's the outcome....I called TOMTOM support today and its back
and working. When doing the updates the application was lost and had
to be reinstalled. Support was somewhat helpful but I still hand to
feel my way through.
1. Went to http://www.tomtom.com/6211 and downloaded & ran TomTom
Clear Flash tool. The model didn't match the but that didn't' matter
(Question:Why are my settings not saved when I turn my GO 910/510 on
and off? )
2. I removed TomTom One Home from my PC and downloaded and installed
it again and under My ONE updates were still gray out so I did a
repair from the exe file of Tom Tom home. At that time I was able to
reinstall the Tom Tom One with the application file.
3. I then unplugged it from the USB cable and it said please wait
flashing new GPS. When I plugged it back in there was one more update
to be done. Once more I can find my way!!!!!!

I have the Australian TomTom One XL and had the same problem with the update
and my maps. The sd card got corrupted and the TomTom one XL would no longer
recognise the card.

It was lucky I had a backup of the origional sd card content before hand so
I could just reformat the SD card and reload the origional maps. Then do an
update with just the factory default installed. Which worked fine. Then I
could add the extra maps, voices and POIs I was after without any hassles..

You can also copy the content of the origional SD card to a blank larger
capacity standard SD card and everything should work fine as well. Im
currently using a standard 4gb card and it work fine for me.

The update went from App V6.590 -> 6.593
And my map version is 'Australia' v675.1431
'Western and Central Europe' v675.1409
