New TomTom One XL - Questions & Problems

| My family gave me a Tom Tom One XL for Father's Day, and we were able
to start using in on a trip immediately. The unit is easy to operate
and is amazingly accurate. However, we have some questions and
problems:
1. The maps are clearly not current. On two separate occasions, the
were incomlete or wrong. One street address was not in the database
(3025 Dale Earhnhardt Avenue, Kannapolis, NC) and Exit 76 in I-85 was
shown as A and B, when it is now a single exit. After reading some
posts, it is probably normaly for maps to be two years out of date.
We're in a rapidly growing area, so that's not good.
2. Apparently when the backlight is switched from day colors to night
colors, the voice turns off. That's okay, but it is not mentioned in
the sparse manual. It caused us to miss exit 75 on I-85 late at night.
That's okay, but inconvenient.
3. We got back to the hotel room to install the Home software and
attempt to update the unit. The software will not install. The
computer is Windows 2000 SP4 with all service packs and updates and no
spyware or viruses. The disk freezes on the second or third window in
the installation. We were unable to get to the full manual on disk. If
XP is required for the installation, I cannot find that on the
packaging.
4. My cell phone is a Treo 700W with Verizon with an unlimited data
package. I was able to get the phone and the TomTom to see each other,
but TomTom gets to about 10% on the association slider and tells me
that my phone is not equipped to work with TomTom. There is no mention
in the documentation that accompanies the unit as to what the problem
could me. Maybe that information is only available on the TomTom web
site.
5. To learn more, and maybe to download the Home software that I
cannot install from my CD, I tried to go to http://www.tomtom.com. At
this moment, and as of last night, the web site is either down or not
reachable from my present hotel location. All other sites I have tried
(including Google Groups) are instantly reachable.
All in all, the Tom Tom seems like an amazing unit, but my first
reactions are that there may be some customer service issues with the
company. People who are on the road probably need regular access to
the company web site. Being down for at least 12 hours (if it is down)
seems very unacceptable.
If anyone can provide me any information above, I'd would appreciate
it. In the mean time, I will continue to try to reach the web site and
maybe load to CD on a different computer.

| 1 No surprise on the maps. They continue to update the maps but they will
never be 100%
2 There is a pdf version of the manual for One that is very detailed,
download it.
3 I can't help on the Home install. I'm using xp with no problems. Need to
find out operating systems Home supports.
4. Cell phone requires bluetooth support. Make sure you enable bluetooth on
your XL.
5 The backlight/voice issue sounds like a user preference setting.

| I forgot to mention there is an update to configure your phone settings for
the one. The update is available via Home.

That is incorrect. Changing to Night Colours has no effect on volume at all.

Maps will always be a period out of date, you will never get 100% up to date
maps, that's just the way it is with all sat navs, no good whining.

Nope, it's not supposed to work like that.

If you touch the lower left corner of the screen you make the unit speak
out the last instruction. But that will also bring up the volume slider
along the bottom of the screen. If you touch the screen in the same place
while the volume slider is on display you set the volume to minimum. So
simply jabbing the bottom left of the screen twice will mute the unit.

I just wanted to chime in. TOM TOM does have FAQs on their website and
they did answer some questions that I had. Real live tech support is
mostly a wish although I do remember receiving an email response once.
maps.. yes.. just down in Charlotte and no address for our motel and
no road for our destination. Don't leave home without your paper
maps.
The bluetooth connectivity is lame ... not well documented... and
certainly not functional in our case. The best I got ..was that TOM
TOM knew that a phone was attempting to connect.. but considered it
incompatible .. and of course no mention on it's retail box as to what
phones it will interface with (though perhaps on the website).
Bottom Line: (in my humble opinion) - The things (all brands) are, in
fact, computers, and are fairly complex critters... underneath their
slick text-to-speech user interfaces. And being computers.. we all
know how perfect those things are.
NOT!

Not only are they not up to date, but Jake Alexander blvd doesn't even
show on mine and that road is at least 6 years old. I just bought mine
this week and i am very disappointed with the map. Also found big
errors on other roads.
Guess i will just have to live with it

I had a very different experience wiht the ONE XL. I found the maps
to be really accurate and the screen lighting to be exactly where I
needed it to be. I also never had any issues with the voice "turning
off." I found its re-routing to be really great and actually really
liked the widescreen. I found it to be a really easy to use and
strong product.

| One of the problems that you described below involves the use of a Verizon
phone with your TomTom. I called TomTom on this same matter and they told
me that Verizon does not support Bluetooth on TomTom units. Other carriers
do, but not Verizon because Verizon has their own navigation/GPS system
incorporated into some of their newer phones. I currently have Verizon
myself and plan on changing over to AT&T soon because of the Bluetooth
issue.

Follow up: We just took the TomTom One XL to San Diego. What a blast! We
did not have to look at even one road map. We did miss an exit or two
because we did not fully comprehend the verbal instructions, but once
you learn to connect the visual and the voice, it's a dream. The maps
for San Diego are amazingly up to date.
The one disadvantage is that you don't have to pay attention to the road
names. I'm still not sure what interstate highways we were on. It didn't
matter but for a few seconds. As the booklet says, everyone loves TomTom!
Now I wonder...how many OTHER gadgets are there in use by others that I
would not be able to live without if I knew about them? This TT1XL is my
first usable GPS, so it's a treat.

My TT now works with my Verizon phone (Treo 700W). There is a patch
available for free that enables DUN over BlueTooth on the Treo, which is
what TT needs to connect. It's a lot of reading, but check out
http://discussion.treocentral.com/s...d.php?t=137491. See the posts

Glad to hear you had a good experience! The TomTom GO 910 has the
text-to-speech feature which says road names, and that's a really
great device too, so if the road names thing is your cup of tea, look
into that.
I agree, though, after trying the ONE XL i kind of wondered how i ever
lived without it! :)
