I dunno nuttin' from nuttin'... but I'm trying to figure it out.

I'm looking for a good GPS receiver to connect to my laptop's USB port=20
to use with navigational software. I found this website
http://www.semsons.com/mousgpsrec.html
that seems to have a good assortment to choose from, but don't which (if=20
any) of these to select. Any advice you might have in terms of make and=20
model (on this website or others) will be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks in advance.

Do you already have the navigational software to go with it?
Sometimes you can find the software bundled with a receiver for a good
price.
Just checking Bestbuy you can get Delorme Street Atlas and a receiver for
$70.

Try the Holux GR-213. That has the SiRF III chip set and has excellent
sensitivity. I bought the model that has the two piece cable with a
PS/2 connector in the center. It comes with a USB adapter but various
optional adapters can be purchased so that can be adapted to various
PDAs, RS-232 serial ports, etc.

Is there a particular reason you need a laptop? If not, you could go with a
self contained navigation system that would allow you to route to your
destinations. I recently bought a Lowrance iWay250C and I love it. It was
about $200 and has approximately 2 milliion points of interest which
includes gas, ATM, restraunts etc. You can type in a destination address
and route straight to it from your present location. It runs off of the
power point in the vehicle and has rechargeable batteries that last quite a
long time in between charges. Another cool feature that the iWay includes
is a MP3 player. You can purchase a larger memory card, transfer the maps
and then add your favorite music to have the whole package. If the iWay
doesnt appeal to you, you can choose a Garmin or other type, but you will
likely pay more and they all do about the same thing when it comes to
showing you where you are and where you want to go.

For a beginner, Delorme is a good deal. It's easy to work with and does
a darn good job of routing. I used it when I was still driving.

If the op is talking about driving a "big rig" then CH'll need gps software
designed for that kind of driving. (If you driving a 13'6" high trailer you
don't want software that takes you under a 12'9" bridge or tunnel!)
According to my daughter (who just quit driving otr last year) there is
laptop gps software out there for truckers. They need to consider all
pertinent factors--weight, width, height, type of cargo, hazardous
restrictions, etc. I don't think that something designed for automobiles
will be much good.

I'll second Jacks opinion of the Holux SirFII receiver. I'm using the slim
bluetooth version on my laptop/ with a bluetooth antenna, and on a ipaq
pda. Very sensitive, and fast.Very nice unit s.

CH, suggest that you head over to the nearest Pilot, Flying-J, or TofA and
talk with other "professional drivers" to find out what they're using.
You'll probably find that the "company drivers" have hardware installed
that runs proprietary software but the o/o's (owner/operators) might be a
source of good info for you.

Dave, thanks for the reply. I don't yet have the software but am=20
looking to get a pgm. that's specific to truckers. I'm aware of=20
DeLorme... have an old version of the s/w. I know they make a good=20
product, but don't think what they have is sufficiently trucker-
specific.

Thanks again for the reply.

Thanks for the tip. Sounds like a good one. The woman I spoke with at=20
semsons.com spoke highly of this Holux and also the GlobalSat BU-353
http://www.semsons.com/glbuusbgpsre.html

She seemed to think they were comparable but thought there might be a=20

think I'll likely end up getting one of these two.

Thanks again.

A reasonable suggestion, for sure. But, I've already been on the road=20
