Author needing: GPS-device recommendation (Garmin etc.) for University

Hi there,

the Faculty of Geographic at our University is looking for some
good mobile GPS-devices.

The students should use them by walking, not in the car or on bike.
Their task is to log different positions, like bus-stops or
Starbucks locations :-)

The devices should be able to load color-maps (here in Germany,
we've got digital maps like TOPO-25 with scaling 1:25.000 etc.).

I've read, the Garmin-devices also support DGPS - very interesting!
The problem is: Garmin has got soo many devices on the market -
it's hard to find a really good and suitable one.

Can you recommend me some in these price ranges?

1. less than 200 USD or EUR
2. less than 400 USD or EUR
3. more than 400 USD or EUR

Best regards,
Tobias

Tobias,

I think you already mentioned the company. Garmin seems to have the
widest range of units. The only problem is that you won't be able to
load your digital maps as is. I believe there are conversion programs
out there or you can look at mapcenter.cgpsmapper.com to see if they
already have a map that you can use that will work with Garmin.

Have you checked out Garmin's website? Personally I like the 76 and 60
series of units. They have a large enough screen to be usable as a
map but small enough to be portable. They also take AA batteries
instead of a rechargeable unit. They are a little over $400 US MSRP.
You might consider the Etrex series for the lower end of your price range.

There is also the new Vista series which looks very interesting. I
haven't had a chance to do a comparison of features but physically they
seem similar to the Etrex.

You are right there are lots of choices! Good luck!
