Author Does sendmap20 has an inherent size limitation?

I am trying to upload the whole USA map , approximately 1.5Gb in size to
my card reader for use on my Garmin Venture CX. Anyway, when I hit create
gmapsupp.img in sendmap20, I get an error saying that I do not have enough
memory (the card is 2Gb, the hard drive has >4Gb space) and lists
approximately 1.3Gb as the maximum available memory. It does not matter
whether I do this to the card or the hard drive.

Any idea what the problem may be? (I am playing with some index files, so
I load maps, remove/add index files and reload them)

Thanks,

Turgut

The latest version(4.0) has a 1GB limit, earlier versions 512MB. Documented
on the gpsmapper website.

Hmm.. I am bit puzzled by the workings of garmin GPS systems. Can I
upload few small chunks with different names or does it always have to be
a sinle gmapsupp.img file?

Thanks,

turgut

As far as I know, the Garmins will only recognize one file name for
supplemental detail maps (gmapsupp.img). And, with MapSource, that file
is always overwritten when a new map is uploaded.

For the handhelds with memory cards the gmapsupp.img file is in the
/garmin folder off the root of the memory card. I'm not sure how the
file is located on the models without memory cards.

You can fool around with the storage and naming on gmapsupp.img files
though. You can copy files off to save them and use them later. And
you can rename files and folders to store multiple files and change from
one to another. The Garmins will always use the one with the proper
folder and file name.

Jack,

I did find a free program which purports to be
able to *add* one or more img files to a Garmin
map load (vs. overwriting what is already there).
Website is here:

http://www.mapwel.biz/down.htm

and the program is called MapUpload.exe

I've not yet tried it .. since I don't want to
risk my current load to do a test (yet).

Thanks for the link Phil. That looks interesting and deserving of
further study. I'll have to look at it more.
