Author Question on how to make the TomTom One GPS speak properly?

I just bought my first portable GPS in my life and I'm so very happy.

I never expected it to be so, well, portable. The best part is this
portable GPS is really small and runs off the same cigarette lighter
plug that my phone runs off of so finally one less thing to carry with
me on my trips.

My only problem is I can't make it speak when I want it to speak. And
it keeps saying "motorway" and "haaaalf mile" no matter which US
English voice I give it. The women voices are particularly bad.

How do I get the voice to speak properly?

Are you talking about a *fault* as such - or simply about the difference
between US-English and UK-English terminology and pronunciation?

Which (country) maps are you using?

Might be better in news:alt.satellite.gps.tomtom but, hey, this is
Usenet.

Considering that, according to your headers, YOU are posting into,
"sci.geo.satellite-nav,alt.satellite.gps.garmin,alt.satellite.gps", your
post is somewhat superflouous.

Is this true? Does the TT1 actually run off the same power supply as a
telephone? If that's true, I'm running down now to get one myself. I can't
count the number of times I switched cars or packed bags and forgot the
proprietary charger on my spIII. I'm sick of proprietary chargers.

Does the TT1 really run off the telephone power supply? If so, that's a
first for GPS!

I know it has a plug that goes into your car's cigarette lighter - I
took the ONE XL to North Carolina recently and was glad there was no
need for an external plug (to charge overnight)...just got into the
car and plugged it in and it worked like a charm...It's also (as
noted) super-portable which was great for a car trip when i was going
to a bunch of locations.

I would check this out before believing it works with any phone charger.
After all, they all have different specs.

The charger would need to have a standard USB plug with an output of 5 volts
2 amps.

No. Wrong. The phone charger would have a standard mini USB plug with a
nominal output of 5 volts 500 milliamps. What's so hard about that? If your
GPS is using more than a 2.5 watts of power, then I'd wager it's badly
designed or not a portable GPS device.

Any portable electronic device with fewer than 1.5 watts of power should be
mini USB if the manufacturer wants to stay in business nowadays. I, for
one, never purchase any portable electronic device that isn't standard.

I've been caught with a brick in my hands far too many times to want to
risk it ever again.

Correction. (change 1.5 to 2.5)

"Any portable electronic device with fewer than 2.5 watts of power should
be mini USB if the manufacturer wants to stay in business nowadays."

Standards are there for a reason.

Anyone who buys non standard GPS equipment gets what he deserves.

Buy USB!
