Author Exporting Pole Positions?

I'm coming to the fountain of GPS wisdom here, hoping that someone will tell
me there is an easy way to do what we need to do.

We would like to take lat/long readings (set a waypoint) of our power pole
locations with a GPS and export those to our GIS mapping program.

The mapping program will import CSV (CVS?) files.

Which handheld GPS/software combination do you think would work best and how
would we do it?

I neglected to mention that we do have a Garmin CSX 60 that we can use. I
would think that would be adequate if there is some way of getting a csv
file out of it.

GPSBabel can convert between many different formats.

http://www.gpsbabel.org/

CSV stands for "comma separated values." It doesn't
specify what those values are. One program might
use the following format:

name,easting,northin
g,zone,comment,descr
iption,symbol,elevat
ion,display,color,de
pth

Another program might use:

waypoint,latitude,lo
ngitude,elevation,na
me,symbol,comment,di
splay

In addition one program expects elevation in meters another in feet.
One program supports lat/long in decimal degrees only another
in decimal degrees or degrees minutes seconds or degrees decimal minutes
with the form specified in a header that is also not standard.

So you might have to do some editing of the file.

I am by no means an expert, but maybe a laptop/USB transponder
combination might make the job easier. As far as exporting the data
to an outside file, contact the manufacturers of the equipment/mapping
software they sell. Try Delorme dot com for one that comes to mind.
Maybe their tech support can help you.

Easy, if you have a GPSMap 60 CSx then you can offload your waypoints
using Mapsource to a PC and write the to on of several file formats. CSV
is not among those but tab delimited is. Shouldn't be too hard to fix.
Mapsource can be downloaded for free from the Garmin web site.

Happy mapping, Jan

Hi, I have a Garmin GPS60 that I use to locate monuments, objects,
etc. Here is how I would do it, which would locate the poles to 2 to
3 meters using WG84 datum which would correlate the data to most web
maps! (If I were using USGS paper topos, I would use NAD27
datum) I use UTM because it is a direct reading in meters, and
can be converted to lat/long,,, also meters are easily converted to
feet!

I would set the GPS about 1 to 2 meters approx. south of the pole (for
northern hemisphere) to reduce Satellite blocking ,and about 1 to 2
meters above the ground to reduce reflection noise, (I use a tripod)!

I then click MARK and select average for 15 to 30 minutes,,, when
the average gets down to less than 3 feet I save it as a waypoint,,
(I carry a notebook to give a description, (pole number, etc.) of the
location so that I can edit it later rather than taking the time in
the field)!

I download my files (*.gdb) to Map Source then convert, but you can
use G7toWIN to download and convert the files to many different types
including *.CSV files! I have used Babel, but as a non programmer, I
find it intimidating!!!! G7toWin is simply, click File, Save as,
then select the file type!

Here is a G7toWin help link that also has a link to the free program
download! Hope this helps!
