City Navigator NT vs. non-NT Performance
|
|

| I recently received a Garmin GPSMAP 60Cx... it's a handheld GPS
primarily intended for trail navigation.
However, you can also use it in the car with City Navigator. I'm
about to purchase the new v.2008 that just came out (along with a 2GB
microSD card to hold the maps). Two questions on performance:
1. In one forum, comments were made that for "trail units" like the
60Cx, it's better to get the non-NT version. While the map sizes are
bigger, the compression algorithms are easier for the slower CPU to
handle (in comparison to the "car units"). Is there any truth to this
statement?
2. Does the size of the microSD card or the number of maps loaded
affect speed in a substantial fashion?
Thanks!

I thought it was more prescriptive than that. You *must* use the
non-NT or the NT depending on the GPSR model you have. They are not
inter-changeable, you do not have the choice.

Some units will use either one, I believe.

My 76CSx will use either one, and I'm currently using the non-NT
version of CN NA 2008, replacing the non-NT version of CN NA v8. It
all fits on a single 2GB microSD card.

| Any compelling reason to upgrade from version 8 to 2008?
I'm a little concerned about the one GPS unit mess versus the 2 unit thing
I use the navigator mostly on my 2610
but on occasion I load a set on my 60cs for use on my bike..
most of the time I only have the TOPO based product on the 60CS

Very dependent on where you will be driving.
I tend to assume the POI data will not get better
(sometimes around here it gets worse .. local
school became a YMCA because they use it for that
in the Summer months, even though it is still a
school).
But if you live in an area or drive to areas where
there is substantial development (new roads and
such) then a upgrade may be well worthwhile.

Compelling? Depends on what you're interested in, but unfortunately
there's no good way to tell what's changed without buying a copy.
I did find that the POIs for North Carolina's Outer Banks are much
improved although probably still a few years out of date. I already know
where everything is anyway :-)
They still don't have Currituck Barbecue in Coinjock though.
