Type "GPS for Blind" in Google. There are more solutions than I knew of. I
am legally blind.

Thanks.
But what I get from Google is a series of press news announcements,
marketing talks
nothing showing any working system, updated maps for a specified
region.
Could you kindly be more specific and give me names of some vendors ?
The problem is with maps and more detailed maps than for car
navigation.
I would like to contact developers of such GPS systems for the blind.

Darius,
About 5 years ago, Sendero Group (senderogroup.com) was the leader in
GPS for the blind technology. Now others like HumanWare
(humanware.com) offer alternatives. Other, relatively inexpensive
solutions exist if the user can get some help with customizing for
their travels. For example there are several GPS-enabled devices that
also have media players, which a us riding user can use to alert them
to an approaching stop. Keeping in mind the limitations of GPS
accuracy, the user could create "maps" that would trigger audio
prompts when in proximity to intersections and other points of
interest.
