Following some information provided here, I bought a Street Pilot 2610. I
bought it through eBay -- new, in box, less than $200.00. It is a
discontinued model, so I hope these units don't have to be "activated"
through Garmin. I'm not as concerned with map updates. Can anyone answer
the question about registration or activation of a discontinued model?

Several of you provided a lot help. Thanks!

Many of us GPS owners often concern/care about newer map update when you
don't. If you don't care about map update then just install, unlock
whatever map come with it and enjoy your new toy.

No activation needed. Plug it in, turn it on, open the manual, and go
to work.

If you got any CD-ROMs with it, tell us what they are and we can tell
you what you have for mapping and how current it is. But, in any case,
you'll have the base map with major highways on it. That is always there.

To load supplemental detail maps you'll need a CF memory card. Don't
buy a card larger than 2 GB and don't buy a SanDisk III card.
Otherwise, SanDisk II and just about any other major brand card will work.

If you are outdoors, near a window, or in a single story home you may be
able to get good enough signals to get a fix indoors. Otherwise, you
can choose the "Use Indoors" option to us it without a fix. Give it
10-15 minutes to get a first fix (indoors or out) it will take a while
for it to figure out where it is.

If you got a MapSource CD-ROM or DVD with it, install that and then go
online and update it to the most recent version. That will also update
your USB drivers to the latest version too.

Thanks!! This is very helpful information. I already have several CF cards
for my cameras, so I should be "good to go" with that.
