| I recently bought one of the above devices. In the documentation it mentions
an SD card. However, there doesnt appear to be one in the pack. My question
to the group is this - Is it really necessary to have this card? My device
appears to working fine without it.

Surely the maps are on the card?

Nope. I dont have a card that was my original question. The maps appear to
be on the actual tomtom. It must have some kind of hard drive because I have
actually added a couple of voices that were on the supplied cd.

The Tomtom One has only 32M of internal memory. The UK map is 100M+ and
the European maps are _much_ larger so it must have had the card fitted
prior to shipping.
Is there anything in the card slot on the base of the unit? See the 5th
picture down the page at
http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/tomto...new-edition.php
As far as I'm aware, it is only the top of the range TT910 that have a
hard disk.

Only if you want to add OTHER maps. For example if you visit the USA,
Australia, Timbuctu, wherever - you'd buy and install the maps on an SD
card on those units that have them, then set the unit to read the maps
from the SD card.
If the TT1 does NOT have an SD card slot, then it is useless as a
navigator in any country except the ones covered by the built-in maps.
As far as I know, you can't over-write the built-in maps with new ones,
as they are in ROM. I stand corrected if that is not the case, but that
is the case with many units that have no SD card slot, like earlier
Navmans for example.

Not unless that has a MP3 player or photo viewer or something else like
that it uses the SD card for storage.
You're supposed to be driving an automobile and navigating anyway, leave
all the other distractions off and you'll be safer in the long run.

Ok guys thanks. I assumed that it was a mistake in the documentation that
came with the unit because it appears to be working just fine.

| The internal flash memory is just like a built-in 1 GB SD card. The data
can be changed, added to and erased just like a normal SD card. So a backup
of the TT One's internal drive is essential to avoid problems down the road.
The purpose of the SD slot is, as was previously mentioned, if you wish to
add another map of say, North America. You must put the map and the
complete operating system on this card, and when it is inserted, it is this
card which operates your unit. You do not have access to data on both the
internal memory AND the SD card. It's an either/or situation.
Just pop out the card and you are back to your original map and settings.
It's really no different than the older units where you could just swap SD
cards to operate with a new map.
Some people have thought that you could add extra data, POIs etc. to the SD
card and use it in conjunction with the built-in map. Nope. It's not
possible!

Just got an official responce from TomTom and the unit I have does not need
an sd card as everything is on the internal memory. Went out today and
drove for miles and intentionally got lost and the tomtom got me safely
home with no problems.

But can you use it anywhere other than your own country? Can you
download maps onto it and take it overseas? To me, that is by far the
most useful function of a handheld GPS unit.

Considering it comes complete with maps for Andorra, Austria, Belgium,
Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, GB&Ireland, Italy, Liechtenstein,
Luxembourg, Monaco, Holland, Norway, Portugal, San Marino, Spain, Sweeden,
Switzerland & Vatican City and a free SD slot where more maps can be used I
would say the answer to your question is yes.

On the voices note... I have just bought a tomtom one europe v3 but it
seems that there are only 4 voices installed on the device. Is this
normal? I did not get an installation cd in the pack but i contacted
the supplier for this matter. Will the other voices (other languages)
be on this cd?

There are normally a large selection of voices available, I haven't had
sight of a 3rd Edition so cannot compare. Which voices do you have?
