| I was wondering what the best map software to get for general hiking
in the US is. I have read the Mapsource Topo is not the greatest
softwqare. Are there others work better? Thanks.

| You'll want the Topo 24 maps. Limited to National parks East, Central, West
but they are 1:24 and have major trails. Topo 2008 covers the country but
is 1:100 scale and not very good for hiking IMO.

It would be nice if 24K were available... everywhere...
the 100Ks work pretty good... though...
I have National Geo... TOPO which I like better than Garmin or
Delorme...though more expensive... you have to buy ... by states or
regions.. at about $100 a pop.

| I'm in the same need as you but when I checked out the Garmin Topo 24 maps,
they look like they are limited to the parks they list, or am I wrong?
I have MapSource Topo version 6.13.2, but found Topo US 2008 upgrade at
Amazon.com for $59.10 and a $30.00 rebate from Garmin (final cost: $29.10).
I don't remember all the upgraded features are or how it will look until I
get it.
The National Geographic Topo is really awesome. I have version 6.2.8 so I
ordered the upgrade Topo! 4 PC/Mac. It has 3-D Views and Fly-Thru, etc.
If you like to explore, then consider the Nat'l Geo Topo. On my flat screen
monitor, I can zoom on the maps and find mapping symbols that I don't see on
my paper Topo maps. I find lots of old cemeteries and mines. Also, lots more
creeks and more trails.
