Author Memory card question

I see that some of the latest Garmin receivers accept microSD data cards. I
know that Garmin offer the cards pre-loaded with maps.

Do any of the Garmin handheld receivers allow the user to use the unused
memory of the map cards or add data to a blank card?

All of the mapping handhelds with an "x" in their model name will use a
microSD card.

https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID=145

You can upload optionally purchased supplemental detail maps to the
cards from a PC (and maybe Mac too) application. The GPS receiver will
then read the mapping data from the card.

Those GPS receivers will also save track data to the microSD card if
that feature is turned on.

But, otherwise, the user cannot save and load data like waypoints and
routes to and from the microSD card. That is really a bonehead error on
Garmin's part, having unlimited memory available and not giving the use
any ability to to use it for storing data that exceeds the working
capacities.

The old/discontinued Magellan Meridian handhelds that more or less
pioneered the use of external expansion memory with SD card have a
simple card utilities menu that allows users to save and load track,
waypoint, and route data to and from the card.

I'm not familiar with every gps in their lineup, but so does some of the
Lowrance models. My iFinder Hunt will do that.

That's good to hear. Another potential candidate for my next purchase.
I probably sound like a Garmin advocate but I'm always open to
considering other brands.

I switched from Magellans to Garmins. I've only been using Garmin about
18 months now and am happy with them but the door is always open for
someone with a better mousetrap.

Garmin seems to be going out of their way to dilute the loyalty of many
of their buyers. Magellan seems doomed to failure but may survive, I'd
like to see them pose a serious marketing threat to Garmin. I need to
look at Lowrance more closely before I buy another Garmin.

Hi,

Preloaded SD card with map are READ ONLY SD Card. No extra data can be store
on it.

Alternatively, any standard r/w SD card can be used to store supplementary
MAP from MapSource. I use such a SD Card to store TOPO, road and thrid party
(or free autors) maps on my C550. Of course depending of the map product,
specific unlock key to the GPS have to be obtained (in same case, extra
license fees are required) and map have to be unlocked before upload to the
SD Card. I have upload two cards, so I can change available supplementary
maps on my unit at any moments and in a few seconds. I simply have to change
the SD Card and restart the unit.

Preloaded MAP SD card are to be used by people who don't have (or don't want
to have) a PC connection. There are a simple and convenient way to
get/change supplementary maps on GARMIN GPS in a second. This could be very
usefull in same specific circonstances like boating, trekking or raiding in
desert, were no computer can be switch on.

One thing some people that look at Lowrance don't like is you don't
upload your waypoints with a cable, but I find it an advantage. You have
to change batteries anyway so it's no big deal to pop the card out and
copy data to it.

Where I find it to be an advantage doing it this way is I can break my
geocaching waypoints into groups by city, state, or whatever. When I'm
in that area I load just that file and when I'm done in that area I can
delete all waypoints and load another area, and the beauty of the thing
is I don't lose the waypoints I have deleted because they are still in a
file on the card. I like this method because I don't have a bunch of
unnecessary waypoints cluttering up the gps that I don't need at the time.
