Author TomTom One 3rd vs. Garmin c330? (USA)

I've been searching everywhere, including CNet, and it is almost as if
Maxwell Smart's Cone of Silence has descended on the reviewers. No one seems
to mention how much the map updates cost, if at all. Subscription costs
could make a lot of difference in overall pricing.

I recently read reviews of the TomTom One 3rd edition which no longer
requires BlueTooth and uses "Map Share technology (previously seen on the
company's higher-end units), a new enhanced UI." But friends said that TT
had more problems with sat nav drops when he researched... That may be old
info now though...

I am in the market for a low cost GPS, mostly for long trips to plan
alternate routes on the fly when we run into traffic jams on major highways.
I'm not looking for traffic updates because we do not live or work in a
major city and that would not be worth the $$$. I saw a friends Garmin
Streetpilot c330 and it seemed pretty user friendly, but if it is a beast to
update or you have to pay out the nose for annual updates, it may not be
worth the initial low cost...

I read that teh c340 actually speaks the road names as you come up to them.
That might be a nice feature but it seems there is some confusion in the
ratings as to whether the c330 actually announces the turns at all, or just
can't speak street names. I am guessing that all the units announce turns?
Here's a mini pre-review of the TomTom One 3rd.
http://www.gpslodge.com/archives/013117.php

Anyway, I'm interested in some recommendations for my simple needs. A detour
button or function would be a must when you hit a jam...
Thanks,
Jeff

The TomTom has the sensitive SirfIII chipset receiver. Niether, the C330
nor the C340 have this. The C340 speaks the street names according to
Garmins site, and has the FM traffic alert subscription option.

The price of the C340 is not in the same range as the C330, and TomTom
one. For the price of the C330, I think the TomTom is the better deal. I
have the "C530", and two of the TomTom One.

I am currently eyeballing a 76CSX too.

Thanks. That's the old edition. The third edition doesn't require
bluetooth. It comes out in Oct.

What do you mean "require" Bluetooth? Mine have bluetooth, but I never
use it. It has a USB port.

My misinformation I guess. I thought you needed it to update the maps.

No problem. I would still lean to the TomTom. BestBuy had them NEW
recently for 199. Tigerdirect has the refurb for 179.00. With shipping
added, new is better.

Right, but the 3rd edition is getting good reviews for map updating ease and
it comes out in Oct. Lowest price I've seen is about $248. No discounting
yet.

What is the cost for map updating on the Tom Tom?

I don't often find good price at TigerDirect, and the last time I got a
good price from TigerDirect was somewhere around 19-15 years ago (or I
bought 1-2 items from TigerDirect when it was first available).

And it's possible that you may be able to find a better price from other
store than TigerDirect.

Okay. I offered examples of current actual prices, you said, "I don't
often find good price at TigerDirect, and the last time I got a[color=darkred]
(or I bought 1-2 items from TigerDirect when it was first available).

What you should have said was "even though I haven't looked at any
prices, I haven't had much luck with Tigerdirect's prices, so you may be
able to get a better deal elsewhere."

Well, I didn't mean anything but share with you and other my story about
TigerDirect (none negative but never run into better deal), and for the past
15-20 years I usually spend 5-10+K yearly online (mail order before Internet
was available) but haven't ordered from TigerDirect for ages. The last time
I ordered was Mail Order as it was before Internet was available.

So, your information about TigerDirect is not current, and your view of
TigerDirect is prehistoric (in computer years)?

Are you responding to willshak, or me? Because willshak didn't offer any
data, he asked a question.

Joe, you seem like a nice person but your responses confuse me.

Hmmm.. I don't pay attention to the name so I just have some fun. Also,
my information usually from (price) Search-Engines *not* from my imaging.

IOW, everytime I want to buy something (lot of my orders are $500-$1500) I
spend at least few months researching and few weeks searching for price.

Bluetooth is optional way to sync to live traffic reports and weather; it
needn't be used for mapping or updates. Map share is a way to share
custom maps or corrections, dunno how useful that could be without a
forum to share the data one found, ask for and distribute corrections,
e.g., many Malls in the US are not mapped in TT1, and one can map the
exact coordinates of a particular store.

I bought the TT1 exactly for that reason. And like the epinion review
says, its save me a ton of time avoiding traffic jams. There is a detour
button, its called roadblock, and you can specify the length of the
block, from 0.25 ?? [maybe 0,5] to 3 mi from which to detour around it.

I also like how as you drive in the non-navigator mode, it shows you all
the road names, even those not marked in the highway.

I have very little need for POI.

V2 New Edition has been rated very well and you can find that version at
Amazon.com
