Mapopolis, Holux GPSlim236,Handspring Visor Can it work?
|
|
|
| I have a pile of old Palm Pilots and Handspring Visors
I'd like to put to use. They're PalmOS 3.1 and 3.5.
I have mapopolis that runs on the platform.
I bought the Holux GPSlim236 because it has a serial port.
When I tried to use it, I discovered that it's fixed
at 38.4KBaud. And mapopolis is fixed at 4800 Baud.
Is there a clever (free) way to make this work?
I can use a terminal emulator on the Visor and see the
NMEA coming out of the GPS receiver at 38.4K.
There are versions of mapopolis that allow baud rate selection,
but they won't run on PalmOS 3.x.
GPSGate doesn't run on a Palm.
In a perfect world, there would be a baud rate constant
in mapopolis that could be hacked in the binary.
Ideas?
Thanks, mike

In a perfect world, Mapopolis will still be working in my XV6700, I'm
guessing that you haven't tried to download newer versions of Mapopolis,
you can't! The support and maps downloads are not available any more, no
warning no nothing, so my advice is search for another program that allows
you to change the baud rate and fits your needs, HTH.

You'd be guessing wrong.
But I haven't actually tried downloading a map in almost five minutes,
so something might have changed since then.

It's unlikely that one can find a more up to date map that will run on
a handspring visor any better than mapopolis. But I am open to suggestion.
And Bluetooth PDA's are cheaper than maps anyway. The whole idea was to
make use of the PDA's that I have.
I want something I can leave on a motorcycle and not worry about it being
stolen. 25-cent handspring visors are a perfect choice for that.
And they do work great with mapopolis as long as your gps does the standard
4800 baud.
But the question was: "how do I hack the otherwise working mapopolis
for PalmOS3.x to change its baudrate?"
And yes, it's the latest version they made.
Looks like time to go find a PalmOS debugger and fix it myself.
