I see that you can buy extra maps to load into the TomTom

Would I be correct in saying that if I bought a TomTom today it would
come with the latest western European maps (version 7.10 I think)?

I see I can buy a map of areas that are already covered by the European
set, like Italy.

does the separate map have more detail than the map that is included in
the whole set?

Does anyone know how often maps are released, are they released
regularly in order to 'encourage' users to continually update, thus
providing TomTom with more finance?

Yes you can buy extra maps. The limiting factor is how much memory you have
available.

Older units had an SD card slot, so you could simply buy a bigger card (up
to 4Gb).

Newer TT's have onboard memory - so depends on where you buy it as to how
much memory it has.

Latest maps are v7.10. Previous version was v.675.14**

New maps are supposed to include MapShare - so you can correct errors and it
will share the changes
with other uses (& update the TT information for them for free).

They release map updates annually (thereabouts). The updates are fairly
expensive and are usually
well behind what you would find in a street directory.

I suspect that even after TT pay licensing fees, they are making a fair quid
out of updates.

For the most part, yes. You might be unlucky and get a model which has been
sitting on a shelf for a long while, but you should be okay if the model you
are getting is one of the new x20 ones.

Yes.

No, the individual maps are just the WE maps chopped up.

Usually about once every 6 months to a year or so. But it can be a bugger
trying to find out if they have been updated or not!

Yes, you should just be able to copy the map folder across from the storage
card. However maps need activating and it may be that your map won't
activate on his unit.

One sure way is to buy the Australia map from the TomTom website, yes it'll
cost you more but may well still end up cheaper.

No you can't do it. The maps are 'locked' to the particular unit.
Otherwise, TomTom couldn't sell any maps, could they!

I'm sorry to say this again but you can do it,I got a tomtom 2nd hand only
about a month old,it had uk map on it but also it came with a europe map on
another card, when I put the europe card in it said this has allready been
activated and it gave me a website to go to,having gone to this website it
said it was for uk only which clearly it was'nt,so I rang tomtom up to tell
them of my delema, they was'nt at all interested because I did'nt have the
product code for the card,so I did some searching and got some software
which let me activate it

TOMTOM garantees that you can free update your maps to the latest
release within 30 days after buying the tomtom.
I recently bought a GO910 with maps version 6.5. After a call with
tomtom I was able to download the latest maps from their website!
