More Crossover Questions

| I have downloaded the firmware update from Magellan and it tells me that
loading the update erases my address book and the I should back up any
addresses that are important. I cannot figure out how to get any
information OFF my Crossover. The utilty that Magellan supplies allows me
to import files as CSV and load them onto the SD memory card but I have not
found any way to access the waypoints etc. that I have programmed into the
onboard memory of the Xover.
My second question is if anyone has downloaded or bought Topo Canada for the
Crossover. I get different messages from Magellan. The website tells me
that I can download Topo Canada and that it is compatible with the Crossover
but Magellan support emailed me once and told me that no updates were
available for my unit and again later and said that I should buy the SD card
with Topo Canada. I have tried a half dozen times and I cannot get through
to technical support at Magellan.
One other question I have is about the Reset button. I have been having
some issues with the unit freezing up and Magellan is telling me to try
resetting. I cannot find anything in the so called manual that tells me
whether resetting will erase my address book along with all the waypoints I
have set during my trips.
One thing is clear: Support sucks at Magellan. They really need to get
their act together and I am regretting choosing their product now. If I
don't get some resolution on this soon, I will be warning everyone who asks
about my unit to stay clear of Magellan.
Thanks for any help anyone can provide.

| In my upgrading experience, I have never lost any information on the
CrossOver, despite their claims otherwise. This is not to say it will not
happen, but it has not happened to me. I have an SD card and have backed up
my information to that through the CrossOver backup option every time just
in case.
The Topo Canada (regional) is the only topo map that will work with the
CrossOver, the Topo Canada CD or SD products are only compatible with the
Exporist and other handheld series. I had no problems with the topo
download and installation to my SD card (get at least 1 GB, most regions are
about 250 MB) but there is currently no way to view these maps on the
computer, which is a bit of a problem. They have released their
VantagePoint software (beta) which has a lot of potential and may eventually
be CrossOver compatible, but right now we are stuck with the CrossOver
living a separate life from our PC except for upgrades.
I had to reset once and did not lose anything. Of course, backup to SD card
first.

| Thanks Tim,
I used the Backup and Restore options in user options and it seems to have
worked. It may be, as you say, just that the update did not actually
overwrite my address book but in either case I am updated to Crossover
v2.14.
I'm not clear on whether I can download Topo Canada for the Crossover. Did
you get the Download, SD or CD to work on your Crossover?

| This is the link to the downloadable Topo Canada regions:
http://www.magellangps.com/products...b=0&PRODID=1759
To the best of my experience, this is the only topo map product that works
with the CrossOver. The CrossOver seems to be incompatible with everything
else Magellan, map wise. Perhaps with Vantage Point that will change, but
not yet.

| Thanks Tim and Merry Christmas.
Here is where my confusion on the Topo Canada Maps comes from:
The website says this;
"Topo maps add powerful capabilities to your SD card*-compatible Magellan
CrossoverGPS and eXplorist products. Ready for download, these maps provide
elevation contours, detailed streets and extensive points of interest. "
Email from their technical support says this:
"Regarding the map updates:
We would like to inform you that the mapsend topo canada is not compatible
with your GPS unit. If you require crossover updates for canada, we would
request you to purchase a topo canada SD card from our sales department at
1-909-394-5000, by placing an order and to assist you further to solve your
issue."
I have tried a few times to contact them by phone but I have yet to actually
get to a real person. I just wanted to hear from someone who had actually
purchased Topo Canada in some form or another and made it work on their
Crossover. There is no returning the maps if they do not work so I want to
be sure.
Even the price is not clear from the website:
MapSend Topo Canada

topo maps make navigating your adventure easy. Details include streets,
waterways, parks, and tens of thousands of points of interest for shopping,

They also say:

b.. Searchable points of interest

This is probably for only one region but maybe the $115 is for all the
regions which I would go for. Magellan really needs to get their act
together and be clear about what they are saying. Anyway thanks again for
the input.

| Topo Canada CD maps are not compatible with the CrossOver. I can verify
this as the MapSend software the CD uses does not talk to the CrossOver at
all. I downloaded the BC/Alberta Topo region map after entering my serial
number and needed to save it to the root directory of my own SD card (thus
the SD card compatible disclaimer). With a lot of luck, Magellan will get
their act together and make Vantage Point support the CrossOver, but that
will be a LOT of luck with their track record so far.
I cannot comment on the pre-loaded SD card. If one such Canada Topo card
does exist and costs $115, that would be an attractive deal, but alas you
will have to talk to someone at Magellan to verify that.
In short, if you want all of Canada Topo on your CrossOver, you have to be
prepared to spend $50 per region and have a SD card large enough to hold
each of the 200+ MB files. It is not pretty, but it does work and I can
verify that.

| Thanks Tim,
That is what I needed to know. I will download the individual maps and load
them onto SD. I have to say that I am pretty disappointed with the level of
support at Magellan. I like the way the Crossover works and it's features
for the most part but this map thing should be an easy upgrade and Magellan
should make it clear how to get them. I would think that they make a better
profit on the maps than the units themselves since they are not actually
building anything when they sell a copy of the map, especially when it is
downloaded.
So, what do you think of the BC/Alberta topo map? Is it strictly more
defined topo or is there any other info on the maps? Do you think it was
worth it? You know, you'd really think that Magellan would be more
descriptive about what you get and how you get it when there are many
thousands of people who might buy the upgrade if they knew how and why they
should do it.
Thanks again and Happy New Year.

I live near the Niagara border and was concerned that even though the
unit was supposed to be pre loaded with USA topo maps I could not see
anything on the US side of the display that I would expect to see like
a contour line. Of course if its only 90 meter vertical resolution
then the Niagara Gorge may not appear because its only about 70 meters
deep. So I mistakenly purchased Topo Canada for $115 which of course
did not work. Then I tried to purchase a pre loaded SD by phone but
was told I must get the downloadable version on line, not even the cd
available on line would work, then I must purchase my own SD and an SD
writer. So I bought 2 gig SD for $30 and an Iogear gadget for $20
that I will only use once and purchased the Ontario regional map for
$50. The download took 10 hours on my dial up service for which I pay
$60 for 100 hours block time. It was interrupted twice and a message
told me the download failed, but the file continued to arrive after I
reconnected so I tried it out. Even though it is supposed to be good
to 30m I still see no contour lines for the gorge or the Niagara
Escarpment. When I zoom out I see no contour lines anywhere in
Ontario. Perhaps Ontario is too flat and I should try BC. Even when
I change maps from Ontario to none to Hawaii even, Ontario looks just
the same on screen at any zoom. I mean, shouldn't that 250 meg of
data show something new on the display? I tried a second 10 hour
download from Magellan which was interrupted once and in desperation I
signed up for Sympatico at $20 a month to make sure it is correctly
downloaded. There seems to be no way to look at the file on my
computer to see if it is intact or what it is supposed to display on
the gps. It arrives as a .exe which does become a .img when clicked,
and I presume it is the .img I write to the SD.
I agree tech support is slow, maybe because of the holidays. I
followed the suggestions on the text file that came with the
download. They suggest repeating the download if it is interrupted
which I will try a third time via Sympatico. They suggest upgrading
the firmware which I tried. You enter your current version and they
tell you what you need, but when I clicked on "download now" I was
kicked back a few pages. After some time they did email me back
acknowledging the problem and they suggested a workaround where I
typed the number "1.68" as my current version. This worked and the
unit was upgraded after a five hour download. Another problem could
be "incorrect serial id". Actually the serial number on the back of
the unit at 13 digits is one digit longer than the one on the display,
but on registration they would only accept a 13 digit number. They
suggested the SD card could be bad so I bought a second $30 card.
They suggested I ensure it is not formatted as FAT 32 which I did.
None of these makes any difference to the display.
I know there is a sample of what a mountain area of the USA looks like
in the manual. But does anyone have a sample of what a Canadian
regional map is supposed to look like when correctly installed on the
Crossover?
