Re the MI5 postings !

| His name is Mike Corley and he has been around for quite a few years
now. He does seem to have recently expanded his horizons and is
posting to a more varied selection of newsgroups so, perhaps, he has
just become more visible.
He has got mentions on WikiPedia and there are a number of web pages
that explain (as far you can for someone like him) what he is on
about. For example,
http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/alabaster/A164404
FWIW, some news servers (news.individual.net for one) are very good at
automatically deleting the posts.
The one thing that really gets my goat about it is that I wish his ISP
would stop him posting this sort of stuff. It's worse than Spam as it
sits there on the news servers and Google Groups and just clogs it all
up making our lives more hell than if our emails were being spammed :
(
I now read ng's via Google Groups after some problems with news
servers on my ISP and am now reporting all his posts as spam - for
those that want to follow my example, click the 'More Options' link at
the top of the posting and there's the option to do so in the other
links that appear. I know it's a pretty pointless exercise, but it's
good for my moral...!

Microwave auditory effect

The microwave auditory effect, also known as the microwave hearing
effect or the Frey effect, consists of audible clicks induced by
pulsed/modulated microwave frequencies that are generated directly
inside the human head without the need of any receiving electronic
device. The effect was first reported by persons working in the
vicinity of radar transponders during World War II. These induced
sounds are not audible to other people nearby. The microwave auditory
effect was later discovered to be inducible with shorter-wavelength
portions of the electromagnetic spectrum. During the Cold War era, the
American neuroscientist Allan H. Frey studied this phenomenon and was
the first to publish (Journal of Applied Physiology, Vol. 17, pages
689-692, 1962) information on the nature of the microwave auditory
effect; this effect is therefore also known as the Frey effect.

Human reactions to infrasound
Infrasound has been known to cause feelings of awe or fear in humans.
[9] Since it is not consciously perceived, it can make people feel
vaguely that supernatural events are taking place.
Some film soundtracks make use of infrasound to produce unease or
disorientation in the audience. Irr=E9versible is one such movie.
In music, Brian "Lustmord" Williams is known to utilize infrasound to
create these same feelings.

| To me this is total spam. He is using the typical spam tricks: variations in
spelling, punctuations, computer generated names.. Is there anything to stop
him (or it).

For now, the following Agent filter (using a regular expression)
does the trick:
Subject: {M.?I.?5.?P.?e.?r.?s.?e.?c.?u.?t.?i.?o.?n}

Can it filter on regular expressions? If not, it will be
difficult.

Sorry, I don't know 40tude Dialog. It's said to be a good
program though. I'm sure it must have a kill filter.

Settings>Scoring and actions, under [*] add:
!Delete Subject "M I"

I know there is a more automated way of doing this, but I'm not a script
writer. 40tude's help file has many examples if you would like to write
your own script.
Keep in mind that the filter won't work on the group immediately. You can
force it by going to Group>Apply Scoring and Actions on selected groups.
The filter will work on all subsequent retrievals of new headers.

That's worse than any other filter I've seen before. How can you
possibly be sure that no good subject will ever start with the
letters M and I?
Moreover, it wouldn't even work if the offender did something as
simple as interspersing two or more fill characters.
I hope that somebody can come up with a better filter.

I've tried 40tude and cannot get the filters to actually filter
anything. I made a filter for the MI5 garbage and it works when I test
it in the "Scoring and Actions" dialog but doesn't work when the program
reads new headers.
But FWIW, try this:
!delete Subject ".*M.*I.*5.*p.*e.*r.*s.*e.*c.*"

If it isn't already there, add it. That causes the scoring to apply to all
groups.

If you read all of my original follow-up, I clearly stated I am not a
script writer. The above is a limitation of my abilities, not 40tude. BTW,
the filters above will not match a subject starting with MI, only M(one of
the characters listed above)I. I would expect a normal post to not have a
format matching any of those strings.
I was merely trying to give a quick response since A|B had not received any
help regarding 40tude.

Thanks Jerry, but for what is worth i just pulled messages from the
yesterday and not a single message from the MI5 guy (that is if he/she has
written any), so is possible that your filter is working! Thanks M8!

Pete,
that would work fairly well, but only if Dialog sees it as a
regular expression. Does it?

I don't mind Yahoo, Bigfoot, or Lycos, but Google is taking it a
bit far, being currently the best free mail system for the
masses.

Jerry,
I apologize. There is no doubt about your good intentions. There
is also no doubt that your filter will remove the current breed
of MI5 spam.
I would still hope that somebody can come up with a better
filter that is more selective and a bit more elastic.

AHA. You're a genius :-)
I couldn't figure out why that regular expression didn't work so I read
the help file again. Somehow I missed the sentence that said that a
regular expression must be enclosed in braces!
This does work for sure:
!delete Subject {.*M.*I.*5.*p.*e.*r.*s.*e.*c.*}

Pete,
I think you've done some people here a favor. Interestingly,
Dialog uses the same syntax as Agent, simply putting a regular
expression in braces.
If, like Agent, this works on partial strings (very likely,
because you could add the ^ and $ markers if you wanted to hit
the entire line), then the leading and trailing ".*" are
superfluous, thus my proposal:
!delete Subject {M.*I.*5.*p.*e.*r.*s.*e.*c.*u.*t}
The likelihood that any other subject fits this regular
expression is quite low, so this is a good filter for now.
