Author Porting Garmin Software to Linux

I'm trying to convince Garmin that there would be a benefit to porting
their map software to linux. Even if your not a linux user by
convincing Garmin to port to Linux it gives everyone options.

If I could get as many people as possible to sign the petition below it
would be much appreciated.

Thank you.

What's stopping you making a start yourself, just to prove that you're
willing to put the effort in ? A good start would be software which
handles everything that the GPX (with or without Garmin's extensions) can
handle: waypoints, tracks and routes. The features I've mentioned are all
part of what MapSource does, so the programming would probably all be
useful for the finished application.

If you did that it might convince Garmin that you were willing to put some
effort in as you claim on the petition's page.

Simon.

are you sure about that? Can I load up maps that are in my mapsource CDs
and search/sort/select and upload them to my gps? I just installed it on
Ubuntu (edgy) linux and I am having difficulty doing anything with it and
can't really tell what is going on from the documentation. I suspect some
graphical library is missing which is odd since I got it through apt-get
from the Ubuntu repositories.

no, you can't upload garmin background maps, sadly

but you can do other interesting stuff, like handling "everything that
the GPX (with or without Garmin's extensions) can handle: waypoints,
tracks and routes"

in order to access my Garmin maps I still need MapSource (in Windows)
:-(

that is the big problem/annoyance that I have too (*) and I think it is
worth pushing companies to write "multi-platform" software , specially
big ones like garmin who can afford the effort -- or release enough
information that the open source world can write them.

turgut

(*) so I end up carrying around a copy of vmware, and a windows 2000
vmware image with mapsource installed.

Trying to get Qlandkarte, I've hit a snag.

I installed an ordinary rpm for F8 of proj-4 with rpm -ivh; and
yum tells me "Package qt - 1:3.3.8-9.fc8.i386 is already installed"; but
then I come the troubles.

The third prerequisite for QLandkarte, according to its website,
is Qt 4.2.x -- but I see only downloads for source code, which is beyond
me.

Are there ordinary binaries somewhere? Or at least tarballs?

Oh, and just to check : the maps QLandkarte gives access to *do*
include *topo* maps, right??

Source code compilation isn't all that bad. Typically you download a
tarbal. You run tar much like any unzipping program. Generally
tar -xvf filename
where filename is what you downloaded. I generally put the file under /
usr/local/src/new_directiory, where new_directory in this case would
be qlandkarte

tar makes a new directory. cd into that directory, and you will find
instructions. Usually this is
../configure
make
make install

I installed QLandkarte yesterday, so I would need to double check, but
IIRC the program didn't have the ./configure step.

I ran the program, downloading waypoints and tracks from my 60cdx.
However, it doesn't want to download maps. Still, pretty good for a
first effort.
