Will a serial to USB adapter work on a Legend. My new laptop has no serial.

I suppose you mean USB to serial adapter? The answer is yes

Yes. Do be sure and load the driver for the adapter cable prior to
trying to contact the GPSr.

I think he had it right. There is a "dongle" on one end with a DB9P
connector and it contains a Prologic PL-2303 (or equivalent) serial to
USB bridge. The other end has a USB connector. So it receives RS-232
serial and converts it to USB serial.

Maybe you're thinking of the reset of the process. Where the operating
system creates a virtual COM port so an application can use it.

Yeah, it's worth keeping around as a backup. I got one too. Looking to get
an HCX unit once all the bugs are fixed or maybe the older tried and true 60
or 76 csx.
