I've just bought Metroguide for my 76CS which already has Marine Charts
installed. The problem is that the maps have overwritten the charts. Is it
possible to have both maps and charts on the unit at the same time? on the
unit

You have to load the maps and charts at the same time. You do this on your
PC when you set up a "map" for loading by selecting the charts you want and
then switching to a map window and selecting the maps you need. Make sure
you don't go over the memory capacity of your GPS.

I wonder if the original poster referred to the pre-loaded marine
points-of-interest rather than the stated marine charts? According to the
Garmin web site that (POI) data is overwritten when any (MapSource) maps are
subsequently loaded to the 76(CS). They offer the points-of-interest file
for download, but state that it must be loaded via the serial PC adapter.
Wonder why it isn't possible to load with the included USB cable? Or has
anyone tried receiving the POI from the 76 to the PC, then sending it back
to the 76 when needed?

You can have them on the unit at the same time but you cant view them at the
same time. In order to view the set that doesn't show you have to turn off
the set that does in the map setup pages.
The maps are not like transparencies so whatever map garmin has given
priority to that will be the map you see until you turn it off.
